. I ii TT H. L. PARLETTE, qMc5 USNR Dixie's medical department 'Sis assigned the task of maintaining and repairing the ultimate in complex machinery: the human body. Caring for active duty personnel in the fleet has unique points, such as the first major operation on board in go months, an appendectomy, underway from Pearl Harbor to Subic Bay. An average month in sick bay would consist of approximately 700 outpatient visits, 9oo prescriptions filled, I5O X-rays taken, go physical examinations performed, 140 limited services Csanitary inspections, pesticide spraying, etcb performed and zo minor or major surgical procedures performed. The duty section may expect to be consulted approximately I5 times between the hours of I60O and o8oo on any given day. The personnel of sick bay, I officer in charge and IO medical corpsmen, are quick to realize the responsibility placed upon them.
