,QW THE BRITISH cRowN COLONY Hom: Kona The British Crown Colony of Hong Kong on the east coast of China consists of the island of Hong Kong,'the mainland ci-ty ot Kowloon and land near Kowloon called the New Territories. Hong Kong was not highly regarded by the British public during its early years. lt had an unenviable reputation For disease, typhoons, pirates and other inconveniences. The name itself is thought to be derived from Anglicization ofthe Chinese name meaning Heung's Harbor, the haunt ofa notorious pirate ' named Heung. This colony is used by 7th Fleet sailors as a rest and recreation port.only. All hands usually save up their pennies in anticipation of the short stay in Hong Kong in order to purchase one or two ofthe Famous tailor made suits or possibly a watch, pearls or other iewelry available here at inexpensive prices. By the time a sailor reaches Hong Kong during the West Pac deployment, he is very anxious to use the opportunity to gab with the British people ofthe colony and usually it is quite good to hear that First Hello mate of a British sailor near the China Fl-eet Club. Hong Kong is governed by a governor assisted by an executive council and a legislative council. This British Crown Colony comprises an area of approxi- mately 39l square miles and its principle business area is the city of Victoria on the island of Hong Kong.
