The demand created was for a method by which destroyers could attack enemy submarines while be- ' I yond the sub's attack capabil- ities. One weapons system developed to meet this need was DASH lDroneAnti-Sub- marine Helicopteri. The idea of using a drone helicopter was con- ceived by the staff of the Commander, Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet. The elimina- tion of the pilot gives the ship Commander greater freedom of operation, day or night, and Ens. J.IVI. lVlcDonald ENC P.H. Herron under hazardous conditions. Like all other aircraft the DASH Weapons System requires a great deal of maintenance. While much of the maintenance can be accomplished aboard the destroyer there remains special maintenance and repair that requires greater facilities than can be carried on a small ship. For this reason Destroyer ' Tenders have been extensively equipped with DASH' repaircuapabilirties. Elec- tronics ratings are responsible for the maintenance of Drone Aironics and target control systems. The mechanics and enginemen are responsible for power plant, airframe and other maintenance, while the DASH crew is respon- sible for installation of field changes. . l ATN2 w,J, Stephens ETR2 Fi.
