Pennington The mission of the Opera- QM1 mvi, Holden tions and Navigation Department is to collect, evaluate, and dis- seminate combat and operations c information required for the 'N assigned tasks of the ship, to f 'T provide Intelligence, Aerolog- A T y it ical and external communica- tions service, and to provide safe and effective navigation and piloting of the ship. The tasks of the O8.N Department include the planning, scheduling and coordination of the ship, the continual and accurate plotting of the ship's course and position, recommending courses to be steered, ' and the procurement and maintenance of navigational charts, publications and equipment. g . The Quartermasters assist the Navigator in plotting the ship's course and position underway and are responsible for recording all significant events in the Ship's Deck Log. The Signalmen send and receive messages by flashing light, semaphore and flaghoist, render passing honors to other ships and boats, and are responsible for the proper display of ensigns and personal flags during salutes and national honors. The Radarmen collect, display and evaluate tactical and combat information needed for the efficient fighting and navigation of the ship. The Radio men handle exterior electrical communications and perform this vital function 24 hours a day, in port and at sea. Hellstrom from August '67 to present g X - The mission ofthe Deck and Gunnery Department is to carry out' deck operations and evolutions, to maintain arma- ment and ordnance of the ship, and to procure, handle, stow and issue ammunition and pyrotechnics. The department is subdivided into three separate di- visions: First, Second and Fox Divisions. First Division consists of 34 men and is responsible for the appearance and maintenance of the forward part ot the ship. Fox Division is responsible for all gunnery items, including ' directors and associated fire control equipment. Second T Division's 42 men take care ofthe after section ot the ship CWC JE. Vancleef along with the boat deck. ghipfs Boatswain First and Second Divisions provide and train boat cox- swains, maintain the DIXIE's boats, and Furnish lifeboat details. The men of these divisions see to the upkeep and preservation ofthe decks and sides ot the ship. They also maintain and operate the paravane and airplane cranes. The DlXIE's deck men handle the mooring and an- choring ot the massive tender, as well as the mooring ofthe ships that come alongside. The Deck Department provides technical assistance in tests of rigging equipment and manufactures rigging items when requested. The men of the deck Force stand watches in port and underway, including helmsmen and lookouts. The Gun Gang sees to gun barrel replacements and maintenance ofthe DIXlE's 5 38mm battery, manning the mount for action when needed. Wie mg--.EF -- ,sf
