V E GIN ERI GDEP RT E T The Engineering Department is responsible for running the engines that move the ship, sup- plying the electricity, that gives us lights and runs our boilers, making the steam that cooks our food and heats our ship, running the air conditioning equipment that keeps someuof us cool, supplying the saltwater that We use in our flushing systems and firemains, running the refrigeration system that keeps our food cold and fresh. In other Words, the SNIl?ES as they are affectionately called, keep our engineering plant at a peak. They may be said to keep the heart of the ship going by feeding it all of the necessities of life, they stand Wat- ches not only at sea but in port also to make sure the ship is alive and ready to go at a moments notice. They may not have the best jobs on the Dixie but the Dixie's Engineering Department stays by their stations not only to keep the Dixie ready at all times but also to keep the Dixie ready to serve any of the many destroyers, Which are along side most of the time, as Well as herself.
