DECK DEPARTMENT The BoatSwain'S Mates and Strikers of the First and Second Divisions are a hardworking group of men whose duties have been the traditional tasks of seafaring men since the first ship left ai snug harbor. The responsibility of keeping topside spaces shipshape rests squarely upon their shoulders. A Boatswain's Mate must become proficient in the operation and main- tenance of small craft, possess a working knowledge of the nautical rules of the road, and exhibit the finest sense of good se-amanship and boat etiquette. AS the Gunner's Mates and their strikers aboard the USS DIXIE their primary duty and obligation is to be ready to ef- fectively man the ship'S batteries should any emergency arise. The development of Fire Con- trol Machines, some of the most complicated machines ever devised, create a need for the men to operate and maintain them-thus Was born the Fire Control Technician. A few of the more important skills acquired by the Fire Control Technician are, the operation and main- tenance of fire control radars: electronic and mechanical computers: Servo Systems: and the science of ballistics.
