VV ,, . , mt ,,,, W ,A BLACK SHIP FESTIVAL The Dixie took part in the 23rd annual Black Ship Festival commemorating the landing of Commodore Perry, the visit of the U.S. Navy Black Ship Squadron in 1854 and the 102nd anniversary of the signing of the Ja- panese-American Treaty of Trade and Amnity in 1860. For the trip to Shimoda, a fishing village of 27,000 people, 4 hours from Yokosuka, the Dixie embarked the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, the Honorable Edwin O. Reischauer and the Commander of Naval Forces Japan, RADM E. E. Yeomans. The festival was highlighted by traditional ceremonies of Wreath laying, fireworks, lantern offerings, folk dances and a parade through Shimoda's Winding streets. The DiXie's Color Guard, Honor Guard and a 32 man platoon participated in the parade.

OPERATION HANDCLASP ln Hong Kong the Dixie delivered twenty-four tons of Operation Hand- clasp material for the needy refugees. This consisted of food, clothing and medical supplies donated by religious activities in the United States.
