On February 20th, 1962, the DIXIE rescued the sole occupant of a 34 foot sailing Yawl in 14 foot seas and 50 knot Winds. He Was retired Navy Chief Quartermaster, 1. D. Challinor Who Was in route from Zushi, Japan to Honolulu when the Yawl lost her rudder, mizzen- mast and compass. He had been drifting in the heavy seas for four days.

7' .. - . . r , - .wry 1,-..5:.-',':-: --fs.-- V----1-'ff'-H' ' At Subic Bay, Captain Smith learned that Saint Joseph's Elementary School in the nearby town of Olongapo had only one drinking faucet and at times, no water for two thousand students. This was due to water being drained off by other sections of the town. The call for volunteers for off-duty work was met by two hundred crew members of which the first twenty-live were chosen. Using materials supplied by the Naval Ship Repair Facility, Subic Bay. The volunteers built and erected two, 0119 thousand gallon tank water reservoirs to ensure that water was always available for the hot, thirsty children.
