I HISTORY, USS DIXIE The USS DIXIE CAD-145, who gives her name to the Navy's largest class of destroyer tenders, was built at the New York Sh1pbu1ld1ng Company, New Jersey, and was launched 27 May 1939 The first sh1p to be designed from the keel up for the purpose of repairing and serv1c1ng modern fleet destroyers, the DIXIE was formerly placed 1n comm1ss1on on April 25th 1940, at the Philadelphia N-HV211 Shipyard Her twenty-two years of commissioned SCIVICC IS the longest span of continuous service of any sh1p 1n the Pacific Fleet The DIXIE's entire career has been devoted to serving destroyers of the Pacific Fleet Although San Diego has always been her home port her first five years were spent for the most part in close support of destroyers 1n World War II combat The DIXIE operated in such places as New Caledonia the Herbrides the Sourthern Solomons and the Northern Solomons where she provided the needs of such renowned outfits as Admiral Arle1gh Burkes L1ttle Beavers QDestroyer Squadron 235 in their operations up The Slot She also provided support at the Netherlands East Indies the Western Carolinas and eventually the Philippines The DIXIE arrived 1n Seattle in December 1945 after almost four straight years of overseas duty DIXIE returned aga1n to San Diego and remained there SCI'V1C111g destroyers until March 1947 when she left for Tsingtao China Having been relieved by the PRAIRIE the DIXIE started home in September 1947 and arrived in San Diego 1n October She remained in San Diego and Long Beach repa1r1ng sh1ps until February 1949 when she returned to Tsingtao China The DIXIE left Tsmgtao in May 1949 just before lt fell to the Communist armies and sa1led to Buckner Bay Okinawa The DIXIE departed from Buckner Bay 1n June 1949 for Yokosuka Japan and departed 1n June for Sub1c Bay Philippines to act as headquarters for the American Consul and Charge de Affa1fS on the forced evacuation by the com mun1sts of all Americans in Canton Ch1na In 1946 she turned westward again to assist in Operations Crossroads at the Bikini Atoll.
