They open the way at DillonHigh School to a fortress of learning, where democracy is a permanent part of the curriculum of every sub- ject, and where the laws of fair play and sportsmanship are taught. They swing wide to expel ignor- ance and prejudice. They open and shut to remind us of our duty to work in Dillon High School and to be sincere in our at- titude toward its traditions, so that we may receive the benefits it of- fers. . They close silently to suggest that such an attitude will reflect well upon our school, and thus preserve those same traditions which are our heritage as students. Captured in the approach to, the passage through, and the departure from our doorways is the student's attitude toward the ,school itself, toward the faculty, toward his fel- low students, and toward the activ- ities in which he participates. These are the component parts, the pulse of school life. maine K-ww: wg., , . 91:13 b ggi, as Jus ,Q ,Y X Q is ,E Dillon High School Alma Mater Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater Our hearts belong to Thee. In recognition of his abili- ties as an English teacher, athletic coach, and counselor, and in appreciation of his interest in and devotion to the students of Dillon High School, we humbly and affectionately dedicate this, the 1955 WILDCAT to ..... John W. Fowler, Jr. LEARNING Through the portals of Main Entrance many a student with many a vision has passed: King Arthur with his sturdy Knights, bewigged fore- fathers at Independence Hall, Julius Caesar lead- ing his armies to victory, and the blue -eyed blond in algebra class. Dillon High School's Main Entrance is more than a vision. lt is a passage- way to the worlds of knowledge hitherto unex- plored. It opens the way toa fortress of learn- ing. 7 TO THE GRADUATES OF 1955: Working with you for the past twelve years has been a great pleas- ure and privilege. I remember when you entered the first grade, a group of bright-eyed youngsters, setting out on a new adventure. Now, after what seems only a few years, you are completing your public school training and experience and are moving on to greater fields of ad- venture. It is not everyone's privilege to live with a group for this period of time and to enjoy the thrill of seeing each of you mature into young men and women. For this opportunity, I am grateful indeed. Since you entered the public schools, there has been one phase MR. I. V. MARTIN Superintendent of progress that stands out in my mind. You have developed an ap- preciation of per sonal responsibility in helping fellow students and teach- ers to live together in a more co- operative manner. This achievement has strengthened our school program and, above all, helped each of you to develop as stronger members of a democratic society. Leaving us with an appreciation of your individual responsibility to others will bring happiness and success to each of you in your chosen field of service. You will always be remembered as one of the finest groups with which I have been closely associated. 2. MR. Passing from class to club to assembly during the course of the day, students learn to live and to work with fellow classmates and friends. They learn the fundamentals of livingg namely, to cooperate with one another as a member of a group, to participate as responsible individuals in the opportunities afforded them, and to initiate ideas. Dillon High School's typical doorway provides an inletto activities which enlighten students as to the basic tenets ofdemocracy--the de- mocracy which will be their future responsibility to maintain. 39 tudent Council Q i PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY, TREASURER Bobby McLellan Joe Stuart Lorraine MYSIS The Student Council, composed of elected representatives from each section, provides that all-important link between faculty and students. As each athletic activity passes in its season, the student realizes more and more the importance of a doorway that breathes the laws of fair play and sports- manship. 61 THEY TACKLED, BLOCKED, AND RAN FIRST ROW: Benson, Townsend, Berry, Proctor, Jenerette, Martin, Carmichael, H FOOTBALL DHS OPPONENT 0 Marion 0 0 Bennettsville 6 6 Latta '7 12 Cheraw 7 33 Chesterfield 6 12 Lake View 13 20 Clio 13 18 Mullins 39 14 Fairmont 0 .
