5 It is commonplace to hear many speak of the early days of America and the opportunities for success which were offered to the rugged individualists of that time. But scientists, economists, and world leaders-be- lieve that in the next few decades medical and sci- entific developments and breakthroughs in the space age will make the achievements of the past centuries infinitesimal by comparison. As high school graduates you have the training and the education necessary to take advantage of the many opportunities of this fabulous era, By a lit- eral application ot the Roman adage, Per Aspera ad Astra, success can be yours. However, your thoughts and mine can not be limited in or by space because you and l are capable ot thoughts beyond space. This is a major factor contributing to the dignity ot a human being, the dignity you and l both enioy. lt may be ditticult to realize or to imagine how much we are capable of accomplishing it we put to tull use the space- less capacity of our intellect. Whether our intellect be directed toward art, litera-ture, business, science, auto mechanics, or any other of the countless activities open to us is not impor- tant. What is important is that we realize that it is God's plan that we excel and this we can do. To excel means to accom- plish the best within our ability. Thus excellence, a limitless and spaceless concept, is within the grasp ot all. May you grasp it, with the help of God, in your future. Francis J. McCarthy Dr. Francis J.
