COMMA DING OFFICER CDR JOH A. MACK, USN 4 SEPTEMBER 1972 - I1 JANUARY 1974 Commander MACK is a native of Manchester, New Hampshire, from where he enlisted in the Navy in 1945. He attended Aviation Radio School in Memphis, Tennessee, and served for ten years as an Aviation Radioman and Air Controlman. He became a Chief Petty Officer in 1952 and, in 1955, was commissioned an Ensign after completing Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Commander MACK's first tour of -destroyer duty covered three years on board the USS THE S ULLI VANS IDD-5372 where he served consecutively as Anti-Submarine Warfare Of- ficer, Gunnery Officer and Chief Engineer. He then served three years on the Staff of Com- mander Destroyer Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet as Assistant Force Gunnery Officer and as Officer-in-Charge of the DESLANT Afloat Gunnery School. During his tour he assisted in the establishment of the Naval Destroyer School. After these assignments he served as Operations Officer on the USS GLENNON IDD-840j and afterwards as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer on the Staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Two. From 1964 to 1967 Commander MACK served in the Bureau of Naval Personnel as a detailer and Assistant Head of the Surface Junior Officer Assignment Section. He then joined USS MACDON OU GH KDLG-8j for a two-year tour as Executive Officer. During this period he also served as Navigator for Commander Destroyer Squadron Six. A year in Vietnam as Senior Advisor, Vietnamese Naval Training Center at Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam, was followed by his most recent assignment as Vietnam Placement Officer in the Officer Distribution Division of the Bureau of' Naval Personnel. Commander MACK is married to the former Catherine Aucoin of Morgan City, Louisiana. They have three sons, two daughters, two granddaughters and two grandsons. The family will make their new home in the Louisville, Kentucky area where Commander MACK will command the Naval Recruiting District.
