And didn't you marvel, especially to- wards the end of the school year, at how polished and confident these amateur Demosthenes' have become? Yes, these DLHS speech students, who work hard at correcting their speech faults, have built quite a rep- utation for our school at the various speech festivals in the last years. Last vear, ably instructed by Mrs. Mary Adams, prac- tically all of the speech students in DLHS and a few other interested students entered the local speech elim- ination festival. A number of students from this group entered each of the various divisions of participation which include humorous interpretative reading, seriou interpretative reading, original oratory, memorized ft 'Q scus cs 'J'ev't tfif' f oratory, extemporaneous manuscript reading, extern- poraneous speaking, panel discussion and pantomime. Following the initial elimination at the local festival, twenty-two students advanced to the district meet in Lake Park. At this meet the DLHS speakers really stole the show, amassing fourteen superior ratings. This wonderful showing continued at the regional festival in Fergus Falls as eight of twelve DLHS participants re- ceived superior ratings in their respective divisions. From the regional meet Martha Johnston went on to the state festival where she received a superior rat- ing with her amusing pantomime ot a western cowboy. Competition like this has brought to the speech stu- dents of DLHS many advancements in their speech abil- ities. The confidence and poise gained in contests like these are qualities very beneticial in later life. l as M Sctree M. Johnston does pantomime of western cowboy
