And didn't you marvel, especially to- wards the end of the school year, at how polished and confident these amateur Demosthenes' have become? Yes, these DLHS speech students, who work hard at correcting their speech faults, have built quite a rep- utation for our school at the various speech festivals in the last years. Last vear, ably instructed by Mrs. Mary Adams, prac- tically all of the speech students in DLHS and a few other interested students entered the local speech elim- ination festival. A number of students from this group entered each of the various divisions of participation which include humorous interpretative reading, seriou interpretative reading, original oratory, memorized ft 'Q scus cs 'J'ev't tfif' f oratory, extemporaneous manuscript reading, extern- poraneous speaking, panel discussion and pantomime. Following the initial elimination at the local festival, twenty-two students advanced to the district meet in Lake Park. At this meet the DLHS speakers really stole the show, amassing fourteen superior ratings. This wonderful showing continued at the regional festival in Fergus Falls as eight of twelve DLHS participants re- ceived superior ratings in their respective divisions. From the regional meet Martha Johnston went on to the state festival where she received a superior rat- ing with her amusing pantomime ot a western cowboy. Competition like this has brought to the speech stu- dents of DLHS many advancements in their speech abil- ities. The confidence and poise gained in contests like these are qualities very beneticial in later life. l as M Sctree M. Back- stage crews worlced throughout the performance add- ing their special talents to make what might have been a good play, spectacular. As the curtain rises we find Mr, and Mrs. Newton Fuller purchasing an abandoned farmhouse in Penn- sylvania. Hoping to convert it into a summer residence, as-, x -D 1 i i.. if to N N 2 the Fullers set about digging a well and planting a garden. That is, until they are confronted with a mort- gage and informed that if it isn't paid they will lose their home. Mr. Prescott, a neighbor, appears as a villain who has been wanting to grab the house from the confused and bewildered Fullers. Then a map is found, it is proven that the Fullers own more land than they claimed. Whether it is marching in the heat of the Water Carnival parade or the cold of the last football game, the band is always adding zest and color to community and school activities. Our concert band has been busy since early this year practicing patiently for first the annual winter concert and then the spring concert. Pep band adds spice at games and pep tests, while the Combo, under the direction of Rudy Moe, plays for school dances. This year the band schedule has been changed to allow for regular 6th hour classes. Woodwind sect- ionals are given on Tuesdays and brass sectionals are on Thursdays. This change gives the students additional practice time and does away with after supper sessions. Band offers more to its participants than an extra- credit or a means of enjoyment.
