Q Freshmen Increase Social Standing Entering into the ninth grade, the freshmen ioin some of the many senior high extracurricular activities. The freshmen consider these privileges, such as going to senior high parties and mingling with the upper classmen important assets to their school life. With the aid of tests given by the guidance director, the freshmen uncover their best abilities and choose sub- jects that vvill aid them in planning their vocations. With the help of their teachers, who have taken a special interest in each individual, they develop self-confidence and realize the importance of cooperation in regular class organization and social functions. 2 v-sv 7 Ks 1 3 Q '55 af' Realizing that they are now part of all school life, the freshmen become one of the most enthusiastic groups at games, parties assemblies, and any other gatherings in which they are included. Fresh Off the Press, the freshmen's bi-weekly newspaper, offers iournalistic op- portunities to the future DeLalconian and Detronian staff members. Their class is enlarged by the rural and parochial students and their addition to school spirit is very notice- able to the entire student body. Through the year the freshmen class developes interest and prominence in school and community life. Anderson, Dennis Anderson, Lesley Arneson, Phyllis Baber, Patricia Baulcol. David Baxter, J, D. Pep Club Boosts School Spirit What's a school without school spirit? What's a team without a backing? Nothing. To arouse school spirit and to provide student backing of our teams is the goal of Pep Club. The methods used to obtain this objective are the presenting of pep fe-sts, supervising the cheer- leaders, providing buses to out-of-town games, and urging students to attend all sport exhibitions. After two years of planning and long expectation, the trophy case was finally completed, and now contains the trophies won by DLHS. Pep Club may look at the trophy case with pride, and know that in the years to come, this will be a lasting symbol of the ambition of Pep Club. The annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, which is spon- sored by Pep Club, proved to be enioyed by all. A few weeks before the event, one may find the DL women chasing the men down the halls trying to secure a date for the dance. Q Row I: M, Northrup, S. Huntley, M. Sundvall, M. Peterson, B, Stilke, J. In conference play, the only blemish on their record was a one Touchdown defeat at the hands of unbeaten Fergus Falls. The Lakers were impressive in winning over Moor- head, Breckenridge and Alexandria. ln the Home- coming game against Wadena The theme, Skin- dians , was satisfactorily upheld as The DLHS gridders trampled out a 27-O victory. Other non- conterence tilts Tound The Lakers defeating Park Rapids and Crookston in easy victories 27-O and 20-7, and losing by a single point to Thief River Falls. Under The coaching of Jim Gustafson, the split T Lakers outscored their opponents I46 to 53 and held an impressive edge in total yardage, amassing l907 to an opponents 1318. Laker Cagers Under the direction of new Coach Carl Oman, the Detroit Lakes l-ligh School Basketball Team compiled a winning season with an ll-lO mark. The cagers'got off to a fast start and in winning 4 of their first five showed fiashes of great potential. As the season wore on, it became evident that although they had a fine first five, they had no floor leader or bench strength. This accounted for the fact that ofthe TO losses, 7 of them came by l and 2 point margins and kept them from developing into a really fine team. After being seeded third in district 23 play, the Lakers took a thrilling 56-54 overtime victory from Glyndon in the opening round. The tournament road came to a dead end against Moor- head in the semifinals as the Lakers came out on the short end of a 58-48 count, but some glory was salvaged when the bas- keteers came back to defeat Perham 57-55 in another overtime hair raiser. Bob Moe emerged as scoring champ with 333 points which tied the school record and the Lakers outscored their opponents T252 to TQTO, Prospects are bright for next year as all the veterans except Moe, Jack Lee, and Dean Weimer return.
