K-33 a Split-T Laker Under the able direction of Coach Jim Gustafson, the Detroit Lakes Lakers employing the split-T offense for the first time completed a most successful season by winning four games and losing three. After stretching their victory skein to I6 straight games, the Redclads finally met their match as they were defeated at the hands of an inspired Park Rapids outflt. Other losses were inflicted by Shanley of Fargo, three time North Dakota champions, and Thief River Falls. ln winning four games the Lakers succumbed Fer- gus Falls, Breckenridge, Wadena, and Alexandria in hard fought contests. The Detroit Lakes eleven performed with drive and determination all season. As the season progressed and they gained expe- rience, the Redclads played their best games. Individually, it was John Kertscher, DL's tiny scat- back, who paced the club. Kertscher scored six touch- downs and three extra points to lead in scoring with 39 points. He also led in rushing with a 6.8 average by rolling up 456 net yards in 67 carries. At the annual football banquet Laker co-captain Jerry Fox was named the most valuable player of the i954 squad by his teammates. Next season the Detroit Lakes gridders will have a hard time filling the shoes of Fox and Kertscher. Row I T Agamenoni D We mer E Marotzke J S eeney D Procter J Johnson, J. Kertcher, J, Fox, P.
