Strives for Perfection Passing by room 59 at 8:10 or third hour Tuesdays and Thursdays, the D. L. student may hear the Detroit Lakes A Capella choir rehearsing. This year, under the leadership of a new director, Mr. Langrebe, the choir suc- ceeded in mastering new methods and techniques. As choir students began to realize that singing at public performances isn't the main purpose of choir, their appre- ciation ot worthwhile music grew. The annual Christmas concert given December l2 proved the merit of the group. Enthralled by the yuletide music and setting, the audience was filled with the Christmas spirit. Destination Winnipeg was the thought ot every member as the end ot April rolled around. The choir spent the weekend in the scenic city where they gave numerous con- certs and enioyed the hospitality of the Canadian people. Closing the school year with the annual spring concert, the choir again proved its ability to uphold its position as one of the finest choirs in the Northwest. QP vs 4 X Wa. f'Q-tgsff 4 ,lib 31, F' . Sponsoring student buses to out-of-town games, promoting pep tests and attendance at home games, and choosing the cheerleaders are some of the responsibilities of Pep Club. This year the cheerleaders displayed the newest tad in fashions by sporting bermuda skirts and knee-length stockings at all basketball games. The yearly Sadie Hawkins dance sponsored by the Pep Club was a success. All the vicious Dogpatch women dragged their menfolk to the party. Row l: J. Dilly, M. Walz, J. O'Brien, M. Schroeder, Sec. The efficiency of their operation has been appreciated at our parties by us all. Most of the Mens time is spent on their maior concern: educational films for classes, noon hour movies, and films for civic affairs. They also handle the public address system and help to keep the equipment in repair. Don Herrick and Harold Howe thread a Elm in preparation for a noon hour movie. Thespians cmd FTA Act and Teach Future Teachers Practice teaching at grade and high schools, helping teachers, and visiting colleges are just a few things that the Future Teachers of America do to get an outlook on the teaching profession. Members get every possible chance to work with real life situations and learn the do's and don'ts of teaching. At meetings, teachers and speakers convey their ideas of various colleges and teach- ing methods. ln this way, members learn by advice and experience and leave high school well prepared for their profession. Thespians Under the direction of President Sharon Baber and Adviser Mr. Isaacson, the Thespians presented a one act play tor the student body entitled, The Christmas Rose. The play, given at Christmas, was the club's first dramatic pro- duction. Later in the year, try outs were held for the one act play entered in regional competition. Besides their dramatic endeavors, the Thes- pian members receive training in speech, and direct plays for junior high students. Row I: J, Tabor, C. Eidenschink, C. Eininger, B. After stretching their victory skein to I6 straight games, the Redclads finally met their match as they were defeated at the hands of an inspired Park Rapids outflt. Other losses were inflicted by Shanley of Fargo, three time North Dakota champions, and Thief River Falls. ln winning four games the Lakers succumbed Fer- gus Falls, Breckenridge, Wadena, and Alexandria in hard fought contests. The Detroit Lakes eleven performed with drive and determination all season. As the season progressed and they gained expe- rience, the Redclads played their best games. Individually, it was John Kertscher, DL's tiny scat- back, who paced the club. Kertscher scored six touch- downs and three extra points to lead in scoring with 39 points. He also led in rushing with a 6.8 average by rolling up 456 net yards in 67 carries. At the annual football banquet Laker co-captain Jerry Fox was named the most valuable player of the i954 squad by his teammates. Next season the Detroit Lakes gridders will have a hard time filling the shoes of Fox and Kertscher. Row I T Agamenoni D We mer E Marotzke J S eeney D Procter J Johnson, J. Kertcher, J, Fox, P. For the second straight year, the Detroit Lakes baseball club was forced to limit the number ot their games to tive because ot poor weather. The Lakers completed the season with a I-4 record. Rain and cold held up the Detroit Lakes practice sessions early in the year and prevented the playing of their tirst game until tournament time when they were dropped in the initial District 23 tilt by the Pelican Rapids Vikings. The Redclads had considerable bad luck all season and continued to be subdued by their opponents. Their only win came against Park Rapids as they exploded for the victory and then simmered down by losing to Moorhead in the season finale. For the T955 season the DL Redclads will have eight monogram winners back again. Sophomores Awecl by Sr. High Affairs The awesome sophomores in their first year of senior high are accepted members of co-curricular activities. They readily participate in sports, forensic organizations, editorial clubs, and musical groups, they have found out that participation is the key to enioyable high school life. At first they gained ex- perience and knowledge, then taking minor parts while working towards the next two years when they will preside over and lead their classes and co- curricular activities. During the year the sophomores attended senior high parties and also sponsored parties after some of the games. At these dances they picked up social pointers which will be beneficial in the years to come. The sophomores are faced with many adiust- ments and new responsibilities, However with advice and encouragement from their faculty advisers the sophomores progressed smoothly through the year. j Altenhofen, Adeline 5 K ' Amundson, Dale v A jk 'X gal ,U-G ff:-2 y I fc Anderson, Darlene m , ,, ,- , N, 1 .- r D , Anderson, Donald ' If I, - -f 'Z V ,A Anderson, Faye A X q 1 f' '35 Anderson, .leon 2- pt' ' 0 , Anderson, Marjorie I rl Anderson, Marvin T Q fs ' Anderson, Robin Q' W' A J -f ' 4' 'T A lt c I K ,la , , A -ix.
