CAPT Nori Ann Reed United States Navy USS DETROIT CAOE 45 Captain Nori Ann Reed was born in Orange, CA, but calls Sanibel Island, Florida home. She graduated from Cypress Lake Senior High School in Ft. Myers, Florida in June 1974. CAPT Reed earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology from Florida Atlantic University in 1977. She later earned her Mas- ter's Degree in National Strategy at the National Defense University in 1999. CAPT Reed was commissioned in May 1978 from Officers Candidate School, Newport, RI. She has served on six ships and five shore commands. Her first ship was the USS FULTON CAS 115, New London, CT., where she served as the Damage Control Assistant. She was the Operations Officer onboard USS YEL- LOWSTONE CAD 405, Norfolk, VA and Executive Officer of USS PLATTE CAO 1805, Norfolk, VA. She commanded USS KISKA CAE 355, Concord, CA. and USS WILLIAMETTE CAO 1805, Pearl Harbor, HI. Her shore duty com- mands included Naval Facility Guam, and the staffs of Commander, Naval Sur- face Forces Pacific, Commander, Combat Logistics Group Two, Commander in Chief, US Naval Forces Europe and The Joint Staff. On July 20, 2001, CAPT Reed had the honor and pleasure of becoming the 24th Commanding Officer of USS DETROIT CAOE 45. USS DETROIT served in OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM as a part of the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT Battle Group. Crafting A Bold Training Plan, CDR Kordyjak got USS DETROIT Fully Qualified First Time, every time. His leadership was responsible for two successful port visit, Halifax, Nova Scotia and St. Martinis, VI during Intensive Training and Work Ups. When Sept llth happened his steady hand helped to get underway for Noble Eaglef' The Final Piece of the Puzzle was when USS DETROIT received news that the battle HE was awarded for the year 2000. Dias was bom in Mangualde, Portugal. He spent most of his adult life growing up in Cumberland, RI. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Resource Development from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI in 1984. He entered Officer Candidate School in January 1985 and received his commission that May. After OCS, CDR Dias went to his first ship USS AMERICA CCV 665, where he served in Deck and 3M departments from 1985-89. From 1989-91, he was stationed aboard the USS PATTERSON CFF 106D where he served as DCA. Onboard the USS WARRIOR CMCM 101, he served as the Chief Engineer for 18 months and as XO for 3 months during his 1994-95 tour. On the USS GUNST ON HALL KLSD 44D he was the Chief Engineer from 1995-97. Throughout his career, CDR Dias has received a great deal of military training and education. He attended schools for DCA, Department Head, EOOW and Advanced Leadership. In 1998, while assigned to Commander Western Hemisphere Group, CDR Dias attended the Brazilian Naval War College. His most recent pro- fessional education consisted of PXO School. Assuming duties as Executive Officer in September 2001, CDR Dias main objec- tive is to ensure that USS DETROIT QAOE 41 is combat ready. That includes enforcing standards, taking proper care and training the crew, ensuring that all evo- lutions are conducted safely, and mentoring the junior officers onboard. CAROLINA NYC FLAG PRESENTATION', Command Master Chief CCMDCMJ CSurface Warfarej Otis N. Carolina United States Navy Master Chief Carolina was bom and reared in Mayesville, South Carolina. A 1979 graduate of Mayewood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, he enlisted in the Navy on June 20, 1979 and reported to Basic Training at RTC Orlando, Florida. After graduating from Basic Training he reported to Basic Electiicity and Electronics School at NTC Orlando. He later reported to NTC San Diego where he graduated from Basic Electricity and Electronics School before attending IC A school. Upon graduating from IC A school he received orders and reported aboard USS MIDWAY LCV-415, forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan in March of 1980. After two years onboard MIDWAY IC3 Carolina transferred to USS GUADAL CANAL QLPHK-71 in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was soon advanced to IC2. While in Norfolk, he also served and deployed onboard USS SYLVANIA CAFS-21 and USS EMORY S. LAND QAS- 39J. While onboard EMORY S. LAND he attended IC C School, 688 Class Submarine Repair Course in Groton, Connecticut. In October of 1985 IC1 Carolina transferred to Naval Reserve Cen- ter T ampa, Florida for instructor duty, he also served as Command Career Counselor and Training Petty Officer. In January of 1988 he reported to NTC Great Lakes for IC C School, FFGk-7 Pipeline with follow on orders to USS AUBREY FITCH CFFG-341 in Mayport, Florida In May of 1990 he reported to USS FORRESTAL CV IAVT-59 where he served as Electrical Division Lead- ing Petty Officer and Leading Chief Petty Officer. After FORRESTAUS final deployment and sub- sequent decommissioning, ICC Carolina transferred to Fleet Mine Warfare Training Center, Charleston, SC in December of 1994 where he served as Video Tele-Trainirrg and Conferencing CVTTIVTCJ Coordinator and Training Department Division Officer. Due to Base Realignment and Closure he tenninated shore duty and retumed to sea duty onboard the Navy,s newest oiler, USS SUPPLY QAOE-61 in July of 1995. While onboard Supply he served as Electrical Division Officer, Cargo Fuels Division Officer and Engineering Department LCPOQ he was also advanced to Senior Chief and selected to attend the Senior Enlisted Academy while onboard USS SUPPLY. In May of 1999 he graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy Class ' 86, Green Group and reported to NORU Pensacola, Florida en route to Navy Recruiting District Philadelphia where he served as Recruiter, Recruiter-in-Charge and Zone Supervisor. In March of 2000 he was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer and later selected for the Command Master Chief program in December of 2000. Master Chief Carolina reported to USS DETROIT on 1 May 2001 as Command master Chief. Master Chief Carolinais awards and qualifications include: Navy Commendation Medal CLD, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal GJ, Good Conduct Medal 161, Sea Service Deployment Rib- bon 165, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and various other unit and campaign awards. Admin Department is all about taking care of our shipmates! Our shipmates work hard out on the deck- plates and down in our enginerooms everyday doing all the jobs that they are tasked with. They work hard running UNREP Stations, moving Ammunition, keeping the fires lit in the boilers and standing watch on the bridge. The Admin Department works hands-on with everyone to provide assistance for all adminis- trative matters. We take care of all the legal matters, family information, awards, evaluations, correspon- dence, messages, schools, stay Navy programs, transfers, maintaining personnel records, etc. The impres- sion we want to leave is that the customer has been helped every time they visit our spaces. If we do not have an answer for them, we proudly find the answer and send them in the right direction. We do what we can to treat everyone the same and try to put everyoneis concerns first. Nothing makes us feel happi- er than seeing the Sailors' face and their smiles when we help them out. That's when we realize how much we love our job and what we do for our shipmates. Responsible for about 2X3 of the shipls main mission areas and the maintenance of about 2X3 of the shipls spaces, Deck is a multi-rate department consisting of boatswain's mates, gunner's mates, machinist's mates, electricianls mates and many undesignated firemen and seamen. From putting boats in the Water, maintain- ing elevators, forktrucks, and UNREP Winches, and handling and delivering stores and ammunition to countless hours working on the flight deck and flying fuel and cargo rigs, Deck Department has allowed the ship to support the fleet whenever and Wherever called upon. Their combined efforts and expertise have earned Detroit the reputation as the fleet's finest AOE. McCormick CHC USNR Command Chaplain Chaplain Charles Douglas McCormick, LT, CHC, USNR Chaplain Doug McCormick was born and reared in Brevard, North Carolina. A 1984 graduate of Brevard High School in Brevard, North Carolina. While at Brevard, he was on the football team who won the state 3 A championship in 1982, and the wrestling team for 4 years which placed in the top three schools in the state. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1987 with a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education and minor in BioChemistry. While in College he wrestled on the wrestling team until he was hurt and became the Student Assistant Coach and helped coach 8 All Americans. He finished Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore KY in 1991 and a Master of Arts Degree in Cross-Cultural Studies in 1992. He has traveled and worked in Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Paraguay, Northern Ireland, and Mexico. While in school he helped to start a,Spanish Church in Lexington KY, and was involved in Prison Ministry. He was ordained a Deacon in 1994 and ordained an elder in 1996 in the United Methodist Church - Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. His first parish was in Inner City Philadelphia where he started the Shalom House and was the Pastor at Iglesia Metodista Unida HEI Mesiasf, Until 1996, where he was appointed to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Southern Lancaster County, PA. Chaplain McCormick was commis- sioned November 22, 2000 by Rear Admiral Black, Chief of Chaplains for the Navy. On June 1, 2001 he reported to NETC Newport RI and he attended 6 weeks Naval Chaplain Basic Course, 2 weeks of Basic Officer Leader- ship Training Course, 2 weeks of Amphibious I Expeditionary Course, 2 weeks of Tools, Empowerment, and Ministry Skills Course. Upon finishing Chaplain School he received orders and reported aboard USS DETROIT CAOE-41, Earle New Jersey on August 29, 2001 as the Command Chaplain.
