He enlisted in the Navy in 1975 after attending the University of Massachusetts at Boston for two years. After separation from active duty, LCDR Zagranis became a drilling reservist while returning to UMASS! Boston. He returned to active 1 duty in the Training and Administra- ffff X f X tion of Reserves QTARD Program while finishing his degree at night. After earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, LCDR Zagranis attended Officer Candidate School at Newport, RI. He was commissioned 6 Eeb. 81. LCDR Zagranis served as Damage Control Assistant and Main Propulsion Assistant in USS CONYNCHAM CDDC -17l, as Assistant Material Officer DESRON TWO, and as Engineer Officer in USS BOULDER CLST 119OD. Other tours of duty include Nuclear Power Officer Recruiter, NRD Boston, and Executive Officer Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Readiness Center. Prior to reporting aboard, LCDR Zagranis attended the Naval War College and was awarded a Master's Degree. LCDR Zagranis personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with gold star and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. LCDR Zagranis and his wife Theresa reside in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. During Operation Desert Shield! Desert Storm, Captain Erwin was responsible for recalling and mobilizing all 20,000 Naval Reservists who served so successfully during that war. Captain Erwin earned his Master of Science Degree in Business Administration from Colden Cate University San Francisco, California. He has a proven subspecialty in Anti-Submarine Warfare. He also attended the Naval War College at Newport, RI. Captain Erwin's military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two Cold Stars, Navy Achievement Medal Ctwo awardsj, two Unit Commendations, a Battle KE and various Campaign Medals. Captain Erwin is married to the former Debbie Lee Davis of Dayton, Ohio. They have two children, Richard, Ir., and Michael Austin.

COMMAND MASTER CHIEF MMCMCSSD GARY R. PATTENBURG f' , , f , 'A Af P Master Chief Machinist Mate Gary R. Pattenburg was born in La Salle, Illinois and raised in Peru, Illinois. He graduated from La Salle Peru High School in 1969 and entered the Navy in March of 1970. Following basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, he was assigned to Basic Enlisted Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut He re- ported to USS Detroit on June 24, 1994. His previous tours included: CMC aboard USS Waterford ARD - fin M Z, f 7 W 51, USS ALEXANDRIA CSSN-7571 as COB, USS AUGUSTA QSSN-7105 as CDB, USS CITY OE CORPUS CHRISTI CSSN- 7051, Instructor Duty for Advanced Engineering in Groton, Connecticut and USS JAMES MDNRDE CSSBN - 6221. During his career he has completed six Deterrent Patrols, one Mediterra- nean deployment, one Indian Ocean deployment, and two North Atlantic deployments.
