COMMA D MASTER CHIEF osclvlqsw TERRY H. BARNETT 1 X S 1? E S I F Master Chief Operations Specialist Terry H. Bamett was born in York, Pennsylvania and raised in Harris- burg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Central Dau- phin High School in June 1966 and entered the Navy in July 1966. Following basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, he was assigned to NAVASTROGRU DET B in Rosemount, Minn. Prior to reporting to USS DETROIT July 22, 1991 his previous tours included: USS CON- CORD IAFS-51, Operations Specialist A school, USS STANDLEY ICG-321, USS DEWEY QDDG-45J, Naval Training Center, Mayport Fl., USS NICHOLAS IFFG- 47J, Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy, Newport, RI., and the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. During his career he has completed six Mediterra- nean deployments, one South American deployment, and one North Atlantic deployment. Master Chief Barnett's awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal Itwo awardsl, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle Efficiency Rib- bon Ifour awardsl, Good Conduct Medal Ifive awardsl, National Defense Service Medal Itwo awardsj, Humani- tarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon and the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon. Master Chief Barnett is married to the former Susan Jane lbaugh of Harrisburg, PA. They reside in Tinton Falls, New Jersey with their daughter Stacy.

K W SHIPS NAMED DETROIT USS DETROIT QAOE-41 is the fifth ship in the U.S. Navy's history to be named in honor of the city of Detroit, Michigan. The first DETROIT, a 19-gun sloop, was captured from the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813, having been built at the present-day Amherstburg, Ontario, a few months earlier. Badly dam- aged in the battle, she was towed to Put-in-Bay, Ohio, for repairs but remained laid up until bought by commercial trading interests in 1825. I The second DETROIT, a sloop-of-war, was originally christened CANADAIGUA, but was designated USS DETROIT from 15 May to 10 August 1869, after which she was renamed CANADAIGUA. The third DETROIT, a cruiser commissioned in 1893, had a longer and more colorful career than her predecessors. She steamed to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to protect American citizens during a period of civil unrest, then deployed to Asia for several years before the 1898 Spanish- American war. During this conflict, she deployed to the Caribbean and captured the Spanish steamer Catalina. She then maintained a Carib- bean patrol until she returned to Boston and was placed out of commls sion on 1 August 1905 The fourth DETROIT a light cruiser was commissioned in 1923 She served on lifeguard duty for the Army Air Corps around the world flight in 1924 She then served as flagship for cruiser and destroyer divisions in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets until 1941 She was in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack but managed to get underway and set up an anti aircraft barrage downing several enemy planes Assigned to convoy escort duty for most of the next year she was also tasked to can'y home to the U S 22 tons of gold and silver transferred from a submarine which had managed to escape from the falling Philippines Later she helped guard the Aleutian Islands bombarded Japanese installations in the Kurlles and served as flagship for aircraft carrier supply ships operating off Iwo Jima and Okinawa As one of the few ships to survive the opening day of the war at Pearl Harbor she was among the first to enter Tokyo Bay for the surrender ceremonies on 2 September 1945 She was decommissioned four months later after having carried thousands of our troops home to the United States o 0 o o o 0 0 o 0 7 7 ' 0 0 2 I 1 0 Q Q Q o ooo 0 0 oo o Q o Q 7 oo 0 9 - , . 7 0 as 9 9 0 00 Q o o 7 o o o 0 , , . 7 o 0 0 9 .
