S. NAVY. HER MISSION IS TO PROVIDE RAPID, SIMULTANEOUS, ONE-STOP, UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENT OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS, AMMUNITION, PROVISIONS AND GENERAL STORES TO ATTACK CARRIER TASK FORCES AT SEA. DETROIT IS EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST AND MOST SOPHISTICATED TYPES OF CARGO HANDLING EQUIPMENT. STREAM KSTANDARD TENSION REPLENISHMENT ALONGSIDE METHOD? ENABLES THE SHIP TO EFFECT SIMULTANEOUS AND' RAPID DELIVERY OFILARGE QUANTITIES OF ALL TYPES OF CA-RGO FROM 'FIFTEEN TRANSFER STATIONS KNINE PORT AND SIX STARBOARD5 WHILE STEAMING AT HIGH SPEEDS. SHE CARRIES TWO BOEING VERTOL UH46-D JET POWERED HELICOPTERS WHICH ARE CAPABLE OF TRANSFERRING TO OTHER SHIPS UP TO ONE HUNDRED TONS OF CARGO PER HOUR. ESPECIALLY VALUABLE' CHARACTERISTICS OF DETROIT ARE HER HIGH SPEED AND RAPID CARGO TRANSFER RATES. COMMANDING OFFICER A CAPTAIN HERBERTVA. HOPE, JR.. Captain Herbert A. -Hope, Jr.,j son of Mr. and Mrs. H, A. ,HOD6 of Norfolk, Virginia, was born in Manila, Re- public of the Philippines. jHe graduated from Quincy High School, Quincy, Massachusetts, inf1949.,,After a year of -engineering work at'Tuft's University in Medford, Massachusetts, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy, re- ceivingfhis degree and commission in 1954. After a three year tour of sea duty aboard USS BARTON CDD-7225 aS'CIC Officer and Operations Officer, Captain Hope .began his flight training at Pensacola, Florida, in March 195'7.AjHe earned his wings in 1958 and flew the A-4 Skyhawk with Attack Squadron ONE FIFTY-FIVE at NAS Moffett Field. jCaptain Hope made two WESJTPAC cruises while attached to VA-'155 aboard USS HANCOCK CCVA-195 and USS CORALSEA CCVA-431. In June of 1961 Captain Hope attended the .United States Naval Post Graduate School- and ,studied the field of Operations Analysis. While serving as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, he was awarded a Master's Degree in Personnel Management from George 'Washington University in February- 1964. After his tour at the Naval Academy, he became Operations Officer' for Attack Squadron EIGHTY-THREE. By November 1966, he had com- pleted two Mediterranean Cruises in USS FORRESTAL CCVA-595 and one brief deployment in USS SHANGRI-LA fCVAf38D. ,Captain Hope then began his 1 transition to the A-6A Intruder with Attack Squadron ,FORTY-TWO all NAS, Oceana. In June 1967, he deployed toQWESTPAC as the 'Operations' Officer for Attack Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN, aboard USS FORRESTAL KCVA-595. Captain Hope was awarded the Navy Commendation,Medal fOr 'hiS aCti0Il during the tragic 'fire aboard FORRESTAL on July 29, 1967. ,In April 1968, he returned to VA-42 as an instructor pilot. ,He reported aboard Attack Squadron EIGHTY-FIVE as Executive Officer on 30 September .1968 while the SqU2ldr0Il WSIS d0Dl0yed 'in WESTPAC' aboard-USS AMERICA CCVA-665 and assumed command on 6 June '1969Qprior to deployment aboard USS CONSTELLATION KCVA-645 'on his third combat tour to Southeast Asia. Captain Hope was assigned -ELS' Attack Air Warfare Systems Project' Coordinator, Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force in June 1970. In December 1970 he was ordered as Commander Attack Carrier Air Wing EIGHT, homeported at Naval -Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Virginia. ,Deploying to the ,Mediterranean in 1971 aboard USS AMERICA CCV-665. In March 1972, Captain Hope reported. to -Chief of Naval Operations as the A-6 Program Coordinator in the Aviation Requirements Division of the DCN.O qAir-Warfare! and in .October 1974 assumed the duties of Strike 'Systems Section Head in DCNO fAir Warfarey. In July 1975, Captain Hope reported to Commander United States SIXTH Fleet! Naval Strikinguand Support Forces'Southern Euro e as Assistant Chief D , of Stafffor Operations embarked in USS LITTLE ROCK CCG-45 and later USS ALBANY CCG-105, homeported in Gaeta,,Ita1y. On 30 'June 1977, Captain Hope assumedncommand of USS DETROIT. CAOE-43. Captain Hope has been awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V , two Air Medals with Twelve StrikefFli'ght Awards, ,five Navy Commendation Medals with one Combat V , Navy Unit Commendation Meritorious Unit Com- mendation, Nav Occ atio 1 M d l t ' '-'- - . y UD U3 6 6 , W0 N2lf10I1a1 D0f6llSe Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross ofgGallantry, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
