24 I SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA OPERATIONS i I I I I DETROIT made her first port visit at Long Beach, California, where she remained for a week and engaged in pierside training for underway replenishment. As an AOE, DETROlT's mission is to provide ships of the attack carrier task forces with the three B's - Beans, . Bullets and Black Oil - while underway at high speeds. The Tigers of DETROIT had their first replenish- ments underway when she departed Long Beach on I September 8th for operations and qualification trials off I I the California coast. The first ship alongside to be I replenished was the escort ship USS ROARK CDE-lO35I. Other ships replenished during DETROlT's 4 first week of operations were USS HALSEY IDLG-23I, we USS ALBERT DAVID IDE-1050i and USS KITTY HAWK ICVA-63I. ' On September 16th DETROIT returned to Long Beach and after a brief stay departed again -on September 21st in search of more thirsty ships. During . her second week of operations off the California coast - DETROlT's Tigers replenished USS HENDERSON IDD-785I, USS HEPBURN IDE-1055l, USS ORLECK I - IDD-886I, USS R. K. TURNER IDLG-20I, and USS I WADDELL IDDG-24I. She concluded a busy week Of I serving up the three B's by steaming to San Diego for the weekend of September 25th. q '
