Her mission is to provide rapid, simultaneous, one-stop, underway replenishment of petroleum products, ammuni- tion, provisions and general stores to attack carrier task forces at sea. DETROIT is equipped with the latest and most sophisticated types of cargo handling equipment. STREAM lStandard Tensioned Replenishment Alongside lVlethodl enables the ship to effect simultaneous and rapid delivery of large quantities of all types of cargo from fifteen transfer stations lnine port and six starboardl while steaming at high speeds. She carries three Boeing Vertol UH46-D jet-powered helicopters which are capable of transferring to other ships up to one hundred tons of cargo per hour. r Especially valuable characteristics of DETROIT are her high speed and rapid cargo transfer rates. These permit her to operate in formation with fast attack carrier task forces and to replenish them rapidly, thus reducing their time alongside. The Fast Combat Support Ship is considered to be a revolutionary development in the exacting science of mobile logistic support of combatant forces at sea. 10 Li 4519? isfiflf if , , .,,. if LX? fl 1 x X 5 .v 4 f 7 'V ffl 5, 5351 if 212 fbi COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN ROBERT B. BA RTOSH, USN I Prayer ior Detroit Lord God and Father of us all, we are grateful for the men and women who in times of war and peace have given dedicated service to the United States Navy and their country. lylay we, who are the first to serve in DETROIT, be inspired by their spirit of service! Help us to rigorously search out relevant means for serving not only the needs of our ship, the Navy and our country, but also of serving the great needs of all peoples of the earth. lVlay no spirit of discouragement be harbored amongst us as we face the tasks of preparing the ship for service. lVlay no spirit of ill will brood over us as we struggle with the realities of learning to live and work together. lVlay no spirit of acquiescence prevent us from correcting what needs to be corrected. Above all, O Lord, keep us mindful of our common bonds with all mankind as vve strive for peace in the world, - for understanding among nations, for preservation of the earth, You have committed and entrusted to the care of man.
