Hlstoru of the Semor Class
T was the seventh day of September, 1928 a calm peaceful autumn day radiant
wlth the sunshine of hope cheer and Joyous promr e that the good shrp Deshler
High School stood at anchor at the wharf of th new school year It was the
same old shrp that had carrled many passengers to safe h ubor but this day was a
gala day rn lts hrstory Vlany people gazed upon t rn wonder as they watched the 31
beautiful and charming young ladies and the 16 bold md d rshln youu gcntlemen, as
they o happrly sleppccl aboard for rt was rumored th xt thcy were zbmut to set sul
over new and untrled waters ln a quest for Thc I4 untarn of Perfe t Under standlng
As the shrp stood at anchor on that eventful mornln thc passengers b an to ar
rrve and as I was the first to be en olled upcn the 11st of 1 rs ermgers to me was rn
trusted the important ta k of writing the loff of the voy 150 the yoy :ge they all real
lzed was to be the mo t imp rtant of' therr lrve I had scarccly finished the task of
pl zclng my srgnzture upon the ships regrster when a companion Joined me Martha
Mae Hales had arled with me through the crghth grlde crur e among the islands of
Smaller Learning and who was to Join me rn th s larffcr voyage We went below
and were assigned our berths XX hen we cam up on de k agarn we hastened to see
what names were on the shlp s record now W hy ' As we gazed we saw the old fa
mrlrar names of Joe 'VIcVS1ll1ams Hazel Krnzer Ellrs W ebb Nan Corbrtt Sara Brower
and soon so many were crowdrng around us that all the berths were filled and we were
assured of a very happy voyage
We were naturally very enthusrastrc and asked many exffer Questions of our cap
tam as to the rncrdents of our voyage and its probable length He a sured us that lf
we were perseverrng and dllrgent in our dutxes we should e lSlly reach our destrnatron
we bade our parents and frrends good bye md waved our handkerehlefs from the deck
at those lefc behind m Grammar Grades As we ste rmed nw xy from the wharf and
out of the harbor we actually embarked for a four year absence on our voyage of
Hrffh School Lrfe
We were young and s crally rnclmed so rt drd not take us long to become acquamt
ed wlth our fellow passengers nor to feel very much at home with our prlot the cap
tam the stewar de s and even the porter Our fears of shipwreck were entlrely wiped
away rn our assurance that so rble a staff of seamen hid us rn their charge There
were naturally a few cases of sea rckness and various ones were tempted to throw up
Algebra Geometry und other drsagreeable dishes and toss some of their best belongln fs
overboard rn times of rough ea but the st wardess assured them calmly that thev
would only have to consume these rndlge trbles over and over until they were perfectly
assrmrlated and so they bravely managed to hold them down We notlced at the out
set of the voy age that the strerm up n whlch we had s t s nl was comparatlvelv nar
row and sheltered but usm our field glasses we could see such wide yrstas of water
ahead that we were led to rnqurre of the c rptarn the significance of the srtuatlon H
explalned to us th tt the voyage of Hrgh School Lrfe was ln realrty to be over four
seas though the four bodres cf water were so closely Joined together that they seemed
but one immense ser He rnformed us furtner that we had entereo upor the first and
smallest of these which was called Freshman Sea
The usu rl intimacy of shipboard oon s :rang up between us yoyagers and we haye
been loyrl shrpmates ever since we sailed oyer Freshmm Sea and received our
checks of rdentrfic rtron from the Pur er almost before wc knew
It has been 1 most dehghtful vcyafre and we haye accumulated many souvenirs
from every port but none that we could not use on our Xoyage of Real Llfe upon
which we are to emb rrk thrs day XX e hay not f iced my gale whrch we were not ablc
to withstand we h rye not been wrecked upon the shoals of my threatemng task
The tides of our ayerages hxye c ntrnued to ebb and flow the wayes of mathe
matical problems have kept their cerseless m fron and commemor rtron the b llow of
examlnatron questrcns have sometrmes trred therr worst to overwhelm us but none
of them haye succeeded We haye been able to procure the necessary passport at the
entrance cf each succeeding se 1 and haye been able to pay the prrce rn good hard work
for ey ery part of the passage
Now we look at the larger more maJe tic ocean rhead and feel that our evnerr
ence has fitted us to w lthstandrng eyery storm md mother anv opposing force with no
fear of dlsaster
