The support for our programs in Des Moines has been beyond the norm of most parts ofthe country. Our graduates return that investment through their productivity, citizenship, and steady dependability. If the rest of the nation could produce the same percen- tage of high quality vocational-technical graduates as does Des Moines, the competitive position of the United States would be greatly enhanced. I am proud to be a part of Des Moines Technical High School and I know our staff and students are as well. We should also be proud of being a part of a school system that is committed to the continuation of our programs in such austere times for education. The wisdom demonstrated by that decision will be rewarded because vocational education indeed is not a cost - it is a wise investment. Vocational-technical education does not cost. lt pays. Even though the cost to produce a voc-tech graduate is greater than that of producing a regular graduate, our society is repaid with interest. Consider the income tax paid by a voc-tech grad. On the average, it is higher fbecause he or she gets more wagesl than that of comparable graduates of a regular school. In seven years, the difference in federal incometax alone pays forthe difference in school costs. Forforty or more years our government makes a profit on its investment. This is exclu- sive of additional sales, state income, property and other miscellaneous taxes. Consider too our country's need to compete in the inter- national market place. The name of that game is productiv- ity. lf the American worker cannot out-produce his or her foreign counterpart, international sales of American pro- ducts decrease. This results in unemployment and the social ills that follow. 4 Mr. Larry Gillespie, vice-principal Mr Wayne Webber vice principal ' 1 r Dr. Judy Richardson, vice-principal Mr. John Cooper, T-l coordinator Des Moines School Board Row One: Peter Cunningham, William Keck, Nolan Gentry, Superintendent William Anderson Row Two: Raymond Pallis, Betty Grundberg, Karen Williams, Sue Luthens, Frank Hildreth am.. 4 'x fc, 'x 'Ry' A: 'Q 4 E x B 'al' Q -T ' ' V- ' it-W, F ti i r ' ' L I' fa 6 I2 . . ... , '..'7 - .h A ' , 1 I R t E25 t mK'L at i g i ff -we A L ' I av K ff Q ' i ' l 6 i , ,W 'I , my A . i'i??'Q '5i: 'KV' an 1- 6, W. One major change was the merging of the school's sports program with that of North High. The fact that Tech athletes now wear green and white instead of blue and gold hasn't altered the pride and loyalty that Tech students have always had for theirfown school. Together with North High, under the slogan TNT lTech-North togetherl we were able to share many victories. However, Tech man- aged to retain several of its extra-curricular activities, such as the band performances, the Tech Express, and the Blue Knights.
