The R Division is The repair division aboard ship. Among iTs many duTies The mosT imporTanT are Those oT alTeraTions and repair. WiThin The division are Tound The MeTalsmiTh Shop, ShipTiTTer and Welding Shop, Damage ConTrol and CarpenTer Shop, and PipeTiTTer Shop. The lvleTalsmiThs and ShipTiTTers do various Types oT repair work Trom The TabricaTion and insTallaTion oT insTrumenT parTs To The replacing oT hull plaTes or bullcheads ThaT may become damaged. They also supervise The ship's venTilaTion s sTems. Y The Damage ConTrol and CarpenTer Shop handles boaT and wood-working repairs and repairs all ship's damage conTrol equipmenT-a never ending Task. The equipmenT used by The Tire and Tire and rescue parTies is also serviced by This group. Under The PipeTiTTer Shop is The responsibiliTy oT mainTaining The heads, washrooms, showers and relaTing piping. This very essenTial iob, someTimes caus- ing The inconvenience oT an overhaul, is, however, a necessary parT oT insuring The healTh and comTorT oT all hands. There are men in The R Division who are ,specialisTs in various Types oT repair and consTrucTion which are noT classed as general worlc. These are The TypewriTer repairmen, loclcsmiThs, sheeT-meTal TabricaTors, welders and burners oT parTicular Types oT meTals, and air hammer operaTors.
