The A division is a parf of fhe Engineering Deparfmenf and is mainly respon- sible for all mechanically operafed equipmenf locafed oufside fhe main ma- chinery spaces. The A division is divided info four groups The refrigerafion and ice machine group operafes and performs all mainfe- nance work on all air-condifioning unifs ice machines and refrigerafors Refrig- erafion enables fhe ship fo carry fresh meaf and vegefables for long periods of fime while af sea. Air-condifioning mainfains fhe berfhing spaces and officers rooms in fhe amidships secfion af a consfanf femperafure. Air-condifioning also keeps fhe magazines C.l.C. and ploffing rooms and ofher vifal spaces in a cool comforfable condifion. Scufflebuffs fhe soda founfain mechanism and heafing sysfems are also mainfained The Diesel group keeps fhe emergency diesel generafors in excellenf operafing The Machine Shop performs fhe machine work fhaf is necessary fo enabl' fhe ship fo operafe in a proper mechanical condifion. All kinds of precision parfs are manufacfured aboard ship-parfs which would be ofherwise unavailable. The fourfh group Deck Machinery has charge of hydraulic eguipmenf which includes fhe sfeering gear anchor windlass and airplane crane This group mainfains fhe emergency elecfric fire pumps locafed abouf fhe ship. The re- sponsibilify of caring for deck winches fhe hangar hafch laundry equipmenf and fhe scullery and galley also falls fo fhis group.
