Senior Class History We, the class of '48 of Derry Township High School, have placed the last link in the chain of our school life. Graduation was a long awaited achievement which we have finally attained. With this honor bestowed upon us, we shall endeavor to do our duty as American citizens. Upon entering high school, we Were 88 in. number. Many of our class- mates have withdrawn from school to enter the Service or obtain employ- mentg thus our enrollment has decreased to 57. Dufilig' OUI' Y92-FS of Schooling, We have had many teachers. To all our teachers we say, Thank you for giving us something that cannot be taken away -- our education. We shall always remember Our activities as Freshmen and Sopho- mores. Class parties, picnics, dances, and football games -- all these are behind us but will never be forgotten. In. our Junior year we enjoyed p1leSGHfiH8' OUP first Cl3SS Play, Pig- tails. Our annual Junior Prom was held in the form of a Dinner' Dance at Green Gables. Besides this, our year consisted of picnics and parties. We ordered our class rings, and hats and pennants. As Juniors we always looked forward to our Senior year. On September 3 we obtained our wish and became Seniors with our hopes high for a happy year. This, our last year, has been busy but excit- ing -- presenting our class play, We Shook The Family Tree, going to all the games, attending school parties and dances. The highlight of this year is the trip for which we have worked so hard. With the passing of Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement, we shall say farewell to our lives as high school students and step out into the world as men and women. Wherever our new chain of events will start we shall be ready to place the links one bv one till our life is fulfil- led. So, with the placing of the last linkl in our life's. first chain, we say Farewell, Alma Mater - forever! For the second consecutive year they have won the Mifflin County League Championship which entitled them to enter the Class B Eliminations of District Six, In the first game of the Eliminations, Derrv defeated the Bellwood-Antis team by a score of 24 to 22. Although thev met defeat in the second game when they lost to South Williamsport by 55 to 35, nevertheless Derry High is very proud of the fine record that the bovs made under the capable coaching of Mr. Huggler. In the League competition the team won nine games and lost one, tying with Burnham for first place. This made it necesslarv for a plavoff with Burnham. That game was played in Lewistown Where Derrv took a decisive victory over Burnham with a score of 30 to 24. In the total scoring line for the League games the Derrv bovs outscored their opponents bv a 502 to 310 record. In Non-League competition our team won two games and lost eight Nevertheless, the bovs played some hard fought basketball. The team was paced for the season bv Ollie Stuck with' 303 points. Next in the scoringline were Lloyd Kahler with 191 points. Jim Hum- mel with 174, Dutch Moore with 128, andl Pete Righter with 57. P The three members of the team who will graduate are Robert Allen James Hummel and Harry Wilson. l ty-six 20? Q Junior Varsity Easicetbeli l-nrst. Row: Burke, Bickhnrt, lxlusser, Allen, Vi'ilson. SIXTEEN victories and only one defeat by a single point margin! Indeed a classy outfit, well deserving the huge quantities of praise being shouted fro-m the house-tops. Sixty eager aspirants reported to Coach Gerald Woomer for the ini- tial practice session early in November i47 for conditioning drills and in- struction in basketball fundamentals. Within ten days the struggle to win starting berths was in full swing. Two weeks later found various combina- tions beginning to click. By mid-season the squad had shrunk to one of 42 players. In the less nerve-racking contests the entire group saw action, thus establishing a record, we believe, of having the greatest number of girl players to participate: in any single cage game. We must sadly say adieu to the following spirited seniors--Patty 4FlashD Wison, Shirley QAmazonJ Elsessor, Christine fSpeedyJ Yetter, Nora QDependableJ Ernest, and tManagereeJ Anna Romig. The Inter-Class basketball champions were the Sophomore boys and the Sophomore girls. The boys' tournament was full of keen rivalry but the Sophomore boys came through with fiying colors. Their nearest com- petitors Were the Junior boys who very nearly won but the youth' of the Sophomores was always dominant. The girls tournament was also won by the Sophomores who had a rather hard time of it. The Juniors. almost took them and no doubt would have if the Sophomore lassies had not had plenty of reserves who were all sharpshooters. The contest was very interesting and unusually fast for girls' basketball. Page Fifty- one ,..-A it id W gn -i 41 Varsity Baseball On March 16th, thirty boys reported to Mr. Huggler for baseball, and practice was begun. Several games have been scheduled, and a good season is anticipated. Due to the early publication of our year book, the season's record will be included in. next year's annual. -l-VdCl4 and lrielcl As soon as thei March winds have dried the Athletic Field, the Intra- Mural tlack and field program will be under Way. There will be no contests with other schools this year. However, students will enjoy participating in events arranged among the various classes of Derry High. Fifty-two Boxing in Gym Class Although there was no boxing team this year at Der- ry High, the boys got plenty of experience under the tute- lage of Mr. Huggler in their Physical Education Classes. Needless to say, the gloves prevented any damage and no broken members of the body were reported. Eddie Rager and Bob Penepaker are shown here in a typical work out.
