James Burns Robert Kaeff Jean Allison Miss Nicol Senior Class History Late in August, 1943, the Golden Eagle left a bundle at the doorstep of Derry Township High School. A large bundle, too; it contained 221 freshmen students to be put thru four years of school and called for, when finished, by the same messenger who plans to scatter them throughout the world wherever they will do the most good and make the most of their talents. How far away those days seem to us, the stately Seniors; yet how close they are when we begin to think of leaving our Alma Mater. As Freshmen, we made good targets for many jokes but we sold our share of stamps, bonds, chances, and magazines. We joined various organizations and brought our new and original ideas to the fore. As Sophomores, we showed promise of becoming fine citizens. The qualities which our teachers strove to cultivate within us began to appear. Then in our Junior Year we became important as the next-to-graduating class. Our enthusiasm was noted at football and basketball games and at track meets. Some of our members won recognition in different sports, clubs, and studies. Our Class Presidents have been Wilbur Stemmier, Freshmen year—Dave Valek, Sophomore year—and Ken Smith, Junior year. At last we have become Seniors. One happy day when we, yes us, assumed that role of the dignified Senior Class. We chose Jim Burns as Class President and Clark McKowen as President of the Student Council. Although our Junior Class play was a real success and our Junior-Senior Prom a dream-date, we surpassed them with our Senior Class Play, our good time at the Junior-Senior Prom of 1947, the hayrides, theater parties, initiations, one-act plays, radio programs, debates, dances, and many other entertainments. Our last year at Derry Township High School was climaxed by our moving and impressive Baccalaureate and our solemn and, somewhat tearful Commencement night. Let us review the ranks with the Golden Eagle: We have lost 100 students, our Senior enrollment is 121; we have gained new friends, broadened our interests, and developed our characters. Talents have been discovered that were never suspected. We have proved our ability to learn and to think. Foundations have been laid that will never be broken or destroyed; ambitions have been furthered; hearts and minds encouraged. We have forgotten the pretty unpleasant things and remember only the occasions when we felt a genuine interest in something, the laughs we shared with friends, the dreams that are becoming realities. Surely we have a great deal to be thankful for in our four wonderful years here at Derry Township High School. 16

Everyono knows Patty ... a pretty cheerleader who never seoms to run out of pep . . . football is her main interest ... is also an active member in several clubs and a member of The National Honor Society. HELEN ANDRAKO ... A tiny commercial student from Room ten, who thinks there is no place like Loyalhanna . . . Helen always has a ready smile and novor seems to hove a care in the world. CECILIA ANGUS . . . Short and sweet, that's Cecilia . . . what she lacks in sizo she makes up in industriousness . . . hopes to become a secretary after graduation . . . everyone thinks our smallest senior is pretty snazzy. JANE BARNHART . . . Who could ask for a prettier drum majorette than Janey ... a really nice girl with loads of imagination . . . always has a smile for everyone . . . her pretty red hair is the envy of all. MARGARET A. BERTSCH . . . Petite and pretty Margaret with her cute dimples charms everyone with friendliness . . . always loyal to our football team . . . makes an ideal cheerleader and sports fan . . . hails from Millwood . . . popular with tho boys. FRANK BLOCKOVICH . . . One of Mr. Ondrey's hard working Ag students . . . Frank's handy to have around, always ready and willing to help out . . . can usually be found working in the shop ... or doing chores for someone. ERMA BORING . . . Nice smile . . . friendly disposition . . . ambition to become an efficient secretary . . . her pretty blond hair has brought many admiring glances . . . shy but o true friend when you get to know her. JENNIE BREZINSKI . . . Jennie is a quiet, sincere, very charming person and comes from Brenizer ... a capable librarian, she is also a good student . . . her friendliness makos her well-liked by everyone. 18
