Vice-President ..... Secretary-Treasurer Advisor ............ James Burns Robert Kaeff Jean Allison Miss Nicol Senior Class History Late in August, 1943, the Golden Eagle left a bundle at the doorstep of Derry Township High School. A large bundle, too; it contained 221 freshmen students to be put thru four years of school and called for, when finished, by the same messenger who plans to scatter them throughout the world wherever they will do the most good and make the most of their talents. How far away those days seem to us, the stately Seniors; yet how close they are when we begin to think of leaving our Alma Mater. As Freshmen, we made good targets for many jokes but we sold our share of stamps, bonds, chances, and magazines. We joined various organizations and brought our new and original ideas to the fore. As Sophomores, we showed promise of becoming fine citizens. The qualities which our teachers strove to cultivate within us began to appear. Then in our Junior Year we became important as the next-to-graduating class. Our enthusiasm was noted at football and basketball games and at track meets. Some of our members won recognition in different sports, clubs, and studies. Our Class Presidents have been Wilbur Stemmier, Freshmen year—Dave Valek, Sophomore year—and Ken Smith, Junior year. At last we have become Seniors. One happy day when we, yes us, assumed that role of the dignified Senior Class. We chose Jim Burns as Class President and Clark McKowen as President of the Student Council. Although our Junior Class play was a real success and our Junior-Senior Prom a dream-date, we surpassed them with our Senior Class Play, our good time at the Junior-Senior Prom of 1947, the hayrides, theater parties, initiations, one-act plays, radio programs, debates, dances, and many other entertainments. Our last year at Derry Township High School was climaxed by our moving and impressive Baccalaureate and our solemn and, somewhat tearful Commencement night. Let us review the ranks with the Golden Eagle: We have lost 100 students, our Senior enrollment is 121; we have gained new friends, broadened our interests, and developed our characters. Talents have been discovered that were never suspected. We have proved our ability to learn and to think. Foundations have been laid that will never be broken or destroyed; ambitions have been furthered; hearts and minds encouraged. We have forgotten the pretty unpleasant things and remember only the occasions when we felt a genuine interest in something, the laughs we shared with friends, the dreams that are becoming realities. Surely we have a great deal to be thankful for in our four wonderful years here at Derry Township High School. 16 Checking op. Oct the Att c titiiny Busy commercials. A. interesting debate. Pensive. Mr. Ondrey ephetnere ClaM Jfn On a beautiful morning in September, 1945 a group of two hundred and twelve freshmen entered the Derry Township High School. This class, in the future, was destined to play an important part in school activities and social events. An air of friendliness and co-operation prevailed in every class room. The freshmen then elected as their officers Bill Warheit, President—Bernice Hlad, Vice President—and Helen Schwan, Secretary and Treasurer. The year was climaxed by final exams and then moving-up day. As sophomores, this group of 212 dwindled down to 175. Though the group grew smaller, the activities of the class, as a whole, became greater. The Golden Eagle now finds a more confident and capable sophomore class with every one striving for the best. In every school club there are many capable sophomores who do their bit to the best of their ability. The progress of this class is only beginning, for the true school spirit now dwells within each sophomore class member. The last two years will be successful, happy ones that will make Derry Township remember and appreciate the class of 1949. And so, the Golden Eagle, after reading this brief history of the Sophomore Class, sees in the future an intelligent group, not of Sophomores but members of the Junior Class. 'JmhMif 3rej t)tteh As the Golden Eagle looks down upon the Freshmen Class, he sees a group of students confused and timid, but strongly determined to see this serious business of education through to the end. Later in the year, however, the Golden Eagle sees the Freshmen Class slowly shake off their shyness and become active and important members of D. T. H. S. At the beginning of the year, the class chose officers to represent them, and student council members to give them a voice in school government. The Class Officers chosen were: President ..................... Breathing a sigh of relief, the Golden Eagle proudly announces that the Freshmen have passed their exams with flying colors. Let the cocky upperclassmen not look down too haughtily on the mentality of the lowly Frosh, rather, look at the honor roll, where the Freshmen are well represented. In fact, more members of the Freshmen Class made the honor roll than did the members of any c other class. With Mrs. Baumgardner as an advisor, the Freshmen have suffered through the agony of being green-ies, and are now ready to take their place in Derry Township as wise sophomores. ACTIVITIES THE STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council dedicates its actions to the improvement of the school. It is made up of a hard working, trust-worthy group of students who are elected by their classmates. Under the direction of Mr. Struble this organization has become the most active in the school. The pictoral and verbal records of our past year at Derry Township presented in the Blue and Gold will long be treasured. Thus the efforts of the yearbook staff will not go unrewarded. Gathering experience and knowledge of their work as they progressed, these energetic students have endeavored to put forth publications worthy of such leaders as Mrs. Zam-perini, advisor to the Blue and Gold, and Mr. Cook, advisor to the Der-Tow. Both staffs deserve our congratulations on a task well performed. Under the supervision of Mr. Fink, they proved themselves worthy of compliments. The band is an organization that puts pep, cheerfulness and eagerness into the hearts of the football players; another is the majorettes. Through the help and kindness of Mrs. Baumgardner, we have five super-twirling girls who go out there on the field, all the time with smiles, twirling to their hearts' content. Very closely related to the orchestra is the chorus, made up of boys and girls with the ability and the desire to sing. They sing songs from Porgy and Bess ' The Bells of St. Mary's , and many other well-known numbers. Despite the fact that the Eagles fielded a comparatively green eleven, they were a difficult obstacle for any team and battled to the end and regardless of the odds. If the Eagles lacked anything, it was not teamwork. Of all the teams in the county, our team was unbeatable as far as teamwork was concerned. We had plenty of it which all added up to a surprisingly successful season. If any of the teams met expected the Eagles to be a push-over , they were in for a very big disappointment. Opening the season on the right foot, the Eagles surprised Blairsville's revenge-seeking team, coming out on the long end of a 14-0 score. Next on the schedule came the St. Vincent Prepsters. After a hard-fought nip and tuck battle, the Eagles forced them to yield to the extremely close score of 13-12. It seems the Eagles just aren't able to overcome the;r long-time enemy, Wilmerding. Once again Wilmerding proved to be the Eagles' jinx. Using the Eagles' passes to their advantage, Wilmerding won 19-7. In their second encounter with St. Vincent Prep, the Prepsters were compelled to fall before the Eagles' onslaught as in their first meeting. This time they lost to the count of 9-7. Young-wood's diminutive team invaded the Eagle territory only to be quickly smothered under the score of 33-7. After turning in an admirable performance through three entire quarters, the Eagles were forced to yield to Homestead in the last 40 seconds of play. The Homesteader's winning by a 19-13 score. 56 The Eagles swooped down on Hurst trying vainly to work their way back into the winning ranks. Scoring two touchdowns in the first half to lead, the Eagles were defeated in the second half to the tune of 20-13. October 26 was a very disappointing day for the Eagles. Having never been defeated by Sewickley Twp. in the history of Derry Twp. football, the Eagles were finally downed. It was a very hotly contested battle ending with the Eagles on Sewickley's three yard line. The score was 13-7. In Glassport, the Eagles found an exceptionally consistent adversary. Glassport continued to fight to the very last only to have the Eagles emerge triumphant with a 20-19 victory. Next came the annual Armistice Day classic at Latrobe. The Eagles displayed some of the best teamwork of the season, fighting to the very end before succumbing to the powerful Latrobe eleven by a score of 27-0. Our football team didn't break any records but it did make a very good showing for itself. At the annual Football Banquet, Coach Kurtz expressed satisfaction at the successful results this season. This successful season wasn't due to a few stars , it was entirely the outcome of team work and that unconquerable will to win. The Eagles started the season off with a bang by defeating Youngwood 34-25 in the first of five preliminary non-league tilts. Then Ligonier handed the Eagles a 26-23 setback. Coming back strong, the Eagles shaded Derry Boro 26-24. In return bouts with Ligonier and Youngwood the Eagles came out on top with scores of 36-21 and 45-27 respectively. The Eagles opened their Section X games by coming out on the short end of a game with Latrobe, the score 29-27. Following Latrobe came Blairsville who also forced the Eagles to bow to a 27-18 defeat. Scottdale visited the nest of the Eagles compelling them to give up a 40-32 score. The next two games also proved disastrous for the Eagles. A powerful Jeannette quintet pounded a 57-23 victory out of the Eagles while N. Huntingdon squeezed by with a 30-27 win. In a nonleague tussle, the Eagles lost to Derry Boro 34-29. Then the Eagles visited Greensburg, returning with a 53-31 loss. Ah! It was a lovely day when the Eglimen broke out of the cellar position by trouncing Hurst 47-24. It was even a happier day when the Eagles flashed perfect form in upsetting Latrobe 44-42. The Eagles joy was short-lived for Blairsville scraped the bottom of the barrel for a 27-20 victory. Invading the Scottdale floor, the Eagles were met with a 38-29 loss. Then came the thriller of the season with section-co-leader Jeannette. The Eagles led through three and one half quarters only to have Jeannette's last minute spurt win by 49-40. Next, the Eagles met N. Huntingdon to lose 45-22. After a hard fought fracas, Greensburg went home with a 39-25 win. In the last game of the season before the play-offs, the Eagles first met Hurst and won 36-20. Then the Eagles traveled to Greensburg to play Latrobe —losing 39-24. Not an impressive record, but the Golden Eagles showed great prospects for seasons to come. Two triangular meets and a dual meet then followed. The Eagles practically ran away with these meets, garnering 266 points to the opponents 157. Next came the Pitt Jr. College meet at Johnstown with the Eagles placing second. Another triangular meet and the Eagles copped another victory. Then the Westmoreland County Meet in which the Eagles won the championship for the third time in succession. At Connellsville, the W. P. I. A. L. meet ended with the Eagles placing third. In this meet, three boys qualified for the P. I. A. A. meet at Penn State. These representatives of Derry Twp. were: Eaglehouse who placed first in the broad jump; Gulas who placed second in the low hurdles and Henry who placed third in the 440 yd. dash. This exceedingly impressive record and the boys who made it possible will long be remembered by the students at Derry Twp. As spring made its appearance this year, the Eagles once again were training for the coming meets. Although weakened by graduation the team will have some very worthy members. The thinclads returning from the 1947 team are: Clark, Stemmier, McKowen, B. Smith, Elliott, Peterson, Long, Kinsey, Wahala, Burns and Hill.
