O 'Y .CT U7 U7 :E U7 1-4- O 'T iXVe of the class of nineteen hundred and forty-live are now faced with the realization that we are about to take on the responsibility of helping to rebuild a world utterly devastated by war. This will certainly be no easy task, but we are sure that through the cooperation of all and the grace of God it will be accomplished. Many of our places in the world of tomorrow will be small and unnoticed, but it will be only through the combined forces of all that a lasting peace will be secured. From our class have gone many of our best friends, and all that we now have of them are memories. VVe are very proud of those who have gone from our midst to defend this great nation. ln the service of our country from the class are: Jack E. Barnes, Donald Rager, Millard Stull, Earl Collins, Cloyd Spigelmeyer, VVillis Breon, Robert Rutherford, and James Dalby. To all of these boys, yes, to all of America's service men, we say, May God bless you and keep you safe from harm, so that you may all return to those you love. VVhen we began our Freshmen year, we were one hundred thirty-three strong. In the dim, distant future We saw our greatest ideal, graduation, placed high on the mountain of education. We realized that it would take much work to climb the seemingly difficult mountain of learning. Now that we have reached that which we sought, it is a simple path, rather than an impassable cliff. During our four years in high school, we have come to find companion- ship in our teachers, and We will ever hold dear our school days under their supervision. The teachers have given us something that no one can take from us, whether we are rich or poor. We shall always have our education. Many of our teachers have been called to the service of this great country and have been replaced. Among the teachers who have instructed us in the past and have since been replaced are: Prof. Vlfalter M. Hollis, Mr. Karl VV. Stade, Mr. and Mrs. William Whitley, Mr. Philip Daubert, Mr. John Miller, Mr. Gerald VVoomer, Mrs. Marion H. Kunsman, Mr. Richard B. Shade, Mr. Wfilliam Edgar Artman, Mr. Ira C. Sassaman, Mrs. John Fagan, and Mr. Orvin W. Troy. Those who have replaced them are: Miss Betty Stine, Miss Sarah K. Richards, Mrs. Elsie Rodgers, Mr. Merrill M. Wagner, Mrs. Donald Kester, and Mrs. Ralph Miller. Through all of these changes, several of our teachers remained with us. Mr. J. VVillia1n Riden, Principal, Mr. David L. Swartz, Supervising Prin- cipalg Miss Luella Nafzinger, Mrs. Harold Kerchner, Miss Clara Stayner, and Miss Dorcas Fick. L'HlSTOlRE Page Twenty-four enior Class Histor Ganfinuecl Miss Nafzinger is to be congratulated for her Hue direction of the Senior Play, 'fEvery Family 'Has One . x.xfea1S'a'wiS11'fO pay our humble gratitude to Mr. Merrill NVagner for his excellent direction of our Junior Class Play, f'Little Miss Fortuneu. Through their untiring ehforts, both of these productions were very successful. Q All of our daysvin this, our last year of school. have been busy ones. As the time for graduation grew near, we became busier. Wfe did not mind it, for a busy person is a happy person. Parting from school after these twelve years is rather sad to us all. XVC will part and go to the many walks of life. Through these past years- we have been equipped so that we may meet the luture with joy and bravery in our hearts. But there will always be a place in our hearts that belongs to our dear Alma Mater. And so we of the class of nineteen hundred and forty-live say goodbye --forever. QZD L'HISTOlRE Page Twenty-five xx . Sl'llOl' ClClSS lDlCl EVERY FAMILY HAS ONE The Senior Class of Derry Township High School presented Every Family Has One on December 1, 1944 at 8:00 o'clock in the high school auditorium. The Reardons are a typical American family whose eccentricities are only normal. Laura, the mother, is a social climber who tells tales about her glorious ancestry. She is deliciously happy because she has engineered a match between her daughter, Marcia, and Sherwin Parker. Sherwin isn't really the one that Marcia likes though. Penelope, the bad little sister. is forever drumming on the piano just when she shouldn't be especially whenever Mrs. Parker is around. 'VVarry, the only son, is positive he is the coming Eugene O'Neill. The father Reginald would rather tinker with the automobile than ticker tape. Amidst his tinkering he does help to get rid of the Parkers. Much comedy is added whenever Nana realizes that Marcia really doesn't like Sherwin Parker and she is forever wisecracking about the Parkers. Also making plans every minute to get rid of them. Nana succeeds in doing this with the help of Cousin Lily who has come to visit Reardons. She is an adorable liar from down home with stage aspira- tions. She isnit really the Cousin Lily who is crazy but another Lily. Nana finds this out so she makes plans to get rid of the Parkers. Lily's performance as the skeleton in the Reardon closet is so convincing and the lurid facts she reveals so hilariously such as making wine in the kitchen sink and the Reardon home being next to the glue factory, shock the mighty Parkers to take heels in a hurry. Essie, the maid, is always trying to lind out the Reardonis affairs. Nana is well satisfied with her job done so well because she has reunited Marcia and Todd Galloway, the one that she really loves. After the Parkers have gone, Lily explains to the Reardons who she really is and VVa1'ry decides that even though his 'ldistant' relative is a bit on the daft side, she's the one girl for him. L'HlSTOl RE grht aa sa unior Class l-lisior VV'e, the Class of '46 passed from Jr. High into Sr. High as Freshmen with 92 students enrolled. At our hrst class meeting we elected our officers, class flower, class colors, and choosing for our motto Tonight VVe Launch, VVhere Shall VVe Anchoru. Not many events occurred during our first year. As We passed from Freshmen to our Sophomore year the enrollment was 78. The events of interest were the election of new officers, our new class colors, which were then changed from Navy Blue and Wlhite to Red and White. A class party was held for classmates and guests. Another year has again passed and we are now Juniors, with the enroll- ment of 61 students. This greatly reduced number in our enrollment is due to the number of students taking up vocational at Lewistown High School, those quitting school, and those entering the service. The following events took place: election of new officers: selecting of pennants, hats, etc., and a farewell party for one of our classmates who left for the Armed Forces. Those that left during our three years in High School are: Glenn Mertz, U. S. Armyg John Kelly, U. S. Navy, Jack Yearick, U. S. Armyg Robert Sulolf, U. S. Navy. The first practice of the Yeagertown High School Varsity Football squad was held on August 27, 1944. The team started the season with only three lettermen: Richard Yearick, Joseph Shade, Robert Suloff. The team after a very few days of conditioning and practice, found it necessary to meet an unusually strong opponent, Hunt- ingdon. It was on September S, that the boys began what turned out to be one of our poorest seasons in football history. Our one victory of the season was oyer Saltillo. For the first time in twelve years, Yeagertown was defeated by our most bitter rival, Burnham. Under the supervision of Mrs. Fagan, the library staff was organized in September. At the hrst meeting lllrs. Fagan stated that the chief objectives of the stan' would center around the arrangement of the library, its contents, system of operating, etc. The purpose of having student librarians is two-fold: first, to give instructions in library science to members of the student body, second, to assist high school students in getting acquainted with the library facilities so that they can make the best possible use of the school library. ln order to prepare members of the library staff for their work, class was held one period a week in the laboratory.
