Hong Kong was also the last oversees stop for DEH- VER before returning to the States. DEN- VER arrived the second time in Hong Kong on 21 February 1994.  , Tn ■■It ■ lil :li . The riew Or- leans ARQ was called upon to take station off the coast. Ar- riving on station on 18 Octo- ber, DEMVER would remain a guardian of the coast until 2 February, with only two breaks in between. DEPIVER performed its humanitarian and reconnaissance missions with the utmost success, landing SEALs, Marines, and Medical Dental teams to sup- port the United nations and the operations ashore. The position off of Mogad- ishu soon came to be known as Groundhog Station , after the Bill Murray movie ' Groundhog Day . Every day was the same, and every morning DEPiVER awoke to the voices of Sonny and Cher. Originally planning to leave Somalia in mid-January, the ARQ was extended to 2 Feb, which ironically enough, is Groundhog Day. IV LI A Groundhog Day Marshall and Punxsutawney Phil ' 60 DEnVER TURFiS 25 DEnVER was commissioned on October 26, 1968, in Seattle, Washing- ton and on deployment celebrated its 25th birthday off the coast of So- malia. The birthday cake was cut by QMGl Qreiner, whose first name, fit- tingly enough, is Denver. The shop performed like a youngster through- out the deployment and has many more birthdays to come. HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S. riAVY Denver celebrated another birthday on deployment. On november 10th, the United States Mavy turned 218 years old. In standing with Mavy tradi- tion, DEPiVER celebrated by having the oldest and the youngest sailors onboard cut the first piece of cake. The oldest member was LCDR Pugliese, CMC, assigned to 13th MEU, and the youngest member was SA Lafond of 2nd Division. Chief Amansec takes over the knife LCDR Pugliese and SA Lafond cut the s( piece 62 UniTED STATES MARINE CORPS ARRIVinQ On 21 riovember, DEPiVER was visited by General Mundy, Commandant of the Marine Corps. General Mundy arrived by helicopter, spoke with Captain Gilbert on the bridge and then addressed the crew over the IMC. Gen. Mundy then went to the flight deck and spoke to the embarked Ma- rines, who were awaiting his arrival in formation. The general spent the remainder of his time on- board personally greeting and shaking hands with as many Sailors and Marines as possible. BEER DAY As in navy tradition, each crew member onboard a ship which is underway for greater than 45 days is entitled to two beers. On 17 Fiovember, DEN- VER celebrated its first of three beer days. Having been at sea since 3 October, each Sailor and Marine graciously accepted his beers and en- joyed a picnic on the flight deck. SEYCHELLES DEnVER received its first break from Somalia on 23 Movember, when she pulled In to the Seychelles. The Seychelles is a small island group approximately 500 miles east of Kenya. It is a tropical vacation spot for many Australians and Europe- ans. The crew had a well-deserved rest and 4 days of basking in the sun. W ' • t- -- ■l fe H H H S t. THAPiKSQIVinQ DiriPiER 1993 66 CnO VISITS DENVER On 19 December, the Chief of naval Operations, Admiral Kelso, visited the Denver. ADM Kelso addressed the entire crew on Site TV, paid a visit to the Chief ' s Mess, and ate dinner with the officers in the Wardroom. Just be- fore dinner, ADM Kelso promoted EPIS Rathbun to LTjg. The CFiO expressed his gratitude and his support for the crew of DENVER. Me told the crew of the support on the homefront, and then addressed the latest issues in the Mavy. This included a brief question and answer period, during which crewmembers could phone in their ques- tions for the CriO. 67 A WARM CHRISTMAS FOR DENVER DEPiVER received some USO enter- tainment, when J.B. Walker and the Cheap Wh iskey band came aboard and played for the crew off of Somalia. The band even adopted an honor- ary member, as they let HM3 Mar- tinez play his guitar and sing with the band. •RnKXVV •AJISTERDAM •IOM)0  UVERPOOL«DIBLCV« i«Mime ni MvFlfRT« mrv ' BVD mnEni ' ViFN A •SALER]VO RONE«N.
