FROM THE COMMANDING OFFICER WE started together last summer with some old experienced hands and a lot of new men, including me. A ship rejuvenated by a thorough over-haul, but cluttered with the residue typical of a ship too long in port. Solid, and ready for sea, but like us, needed the fine tuning. WE grew in experience together: we cleaned, scraped, painted, drilled, and drilled and drilled together. With our lessons well learned, DENVER began to show her worth. We sailed to the Western Pacific eager to join the deployed fleet and anx- ious to exercise our skills at whatever tasks we would be assigned. PAGASA II in hot, humid Southern Waters, with the frustrations of being chased by a typhoon and losing our first anticipated liberty. Being the Task Force Flagship added stature to our role and spurred us to polish to a luster our DENVER Diamond . Tedious liberty in Okinawa, but we became a closer knit crew; on the ball field and in the barroom. WE shared some good liberty and memorable visits to Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Our boat crews, Beachmasters, and UDT teams, capably shared our tasks and contributed to our mission accomplishments. We will long remember our amphibious expertise demonstrated at Numazu, Okinawa, Subic Bay, Tsoying, and the freezing cold waters of Korea. In short we became a ship and crew second to none and can share the pride of a job Well Done I zy
