It has marked the renewal of many Denton Senior High School traditions and the beginning of a new one. We have expressed our respect for Denton High by deeming the golden Bronco on the floor of the south hall as sacred ground, unmarred by trampling feet. A new tradition was started when the Student Council presented the Victory Flag to the student body. When this flag is flown, a surge of pride is felt by every- one, It is the symbol of a school, a tremendously hard fighting team, and a well- earned victory for Denton Senior High School. The western trend seen throughout the 1963 Bronco is one familiar to all, for this idea is the theme of the school. And, in the years to come, as you leaf through the pages of the yearbook, you will see that it was designed to be a lasting remembrance of the spirit shared by all. , fri i ui algal, affiliate. .vflf I7' lf, fvf 5' 1 ', 1 ii-.I I l lliifgi 'gwgfg 1 - 'L. 1 I ' 1 ' E, V v W, tg, its 7 5.sgE.I1.:Q. The entire Bronco Staff labored diligently selling yearbooks on registration I Schedules, Yewibooles The Student Councils efforts toward welcoming new students on registration day provided a general atmosphere of friendliness and good cheer. President Mike Gregory, with Susan Pam Harker, and Gary Shaw were busy preparing one of the Howdy Stations found at DHS. Cathy Lambert and Malynn Brooks begin their first day at DHS search- ing for their advisory teachers. Excited, if not a little bewildered, many sopho- mores and transfers wandered through the halls of Denton High for the first time. day. This was the third year the staff has sold annuals dur- ing registration. I0 omlf I-lowdg ' ow Regmbwtiow D05 l One more turn and Dwayne Gray and Roy Godi will have completed one of the many tasks that launch each school year. The pleased expression on Miss Parson's face indicates that Bill Ashby and joan Barnett have been placed in high English. Dmwuwtes Twof Dogs Mr. Guyer delivers his annual welcom- ing speech to the student body. Ex- plaining the various reasons for the unfinished building, he urges the stu- dents to be cautious and, if possible, avoid the building materials. This year as in previous ones, DHS was extremely fortunate in having some new faculty members. Eight teachers confronted our student body for the first time, they are Mrs. Vaughn, Mrs. Kelso, Mrs. Parks, Mrs. Woods, Mrs. Leyendecker, Mr. Ellis, Mr. Holt, and Mr. Whitson. Mr. Hyman begins the wearisome task of record- ing locks and their combinations. At the begin- ning of each school year, the administration is confronted with many dull and dreary jobs that must be smoothed out before school can officially open. The smooth and efficient issuance of text books was made possible by the diligent efforts of Mrs. Hudson. Mrs. Hutchison issues locker receipts to Bob Harris and Mark Hannah in an ad- visory group meeting. Mrs. Fouts confronted her' sophomore geometry class for the first time reassuring them about their next three years at high school. ' Rawsgwdfakfgeewweot ' ' Anxious to get their senior rings, Tim and jim Barrett examine john Peel's instructions on the care of the rings, Behind them, Polly Broday and Bertha Buskirk await their turn, sleepily wish- ing the line would move faster. At Last! Kenneth Riney eagegyvpicks up his long awaited ring, but the attention ofABclLy,BHLfi and Charlotte Krueger seems to have been caught by the camera for the moment. Our senior rings! The moment every senior anticipated arrived September 15, when the rings were distributed. Susan Selby's beaming face expresses her excitement over her precious ring. Meanwhile, Sally Reeves and Sue james ex- pertly discuss the advantages of receiving the rings at the beginning of the year. Tri-Captains jimmy Williams, Charles Byrom, and Gary Shaw were introduced along with the other members of the football team at the first pep rally of the year. Pep ' Boost Qpwt Mike Gregory, Student Council presi- dent, presents a victory flag to the Denton Senior High School student body on behalf of the Student Coun- cil. I7 Fa!LAotw1ties From the first bright flames of the bonfire to the last dance, Homecoming was the highlight of fall activities. Spirit for the game was aroused as students gathered for the first of the activities, the bonfire. Halls and loclters, decorated by Student Council members and cheerleaders, cast a happy shadow over the big day. The assembly featured a program of varied talent presented by Denton High students. A parade, consisting of cars and floats decorated by various organizations, circled the square and main streets of Denton. Pre-game activities included the presentation of Homecoming Queen nominees, Betty Brinkman, Linda Fulton, Ruth Martin, and Gale Reeves. Then the big moment for one of these girls arrived, Linda Fulton was crowned Homecoming Queen for '63, Bronco Wonderland, the theme of this year's dance, came alive as The Misfits started the dance with a lively number. One large wilted mum, tired feet, and a loosened tie put the final touches on the best Homecoming ever seen at Denton High School. The Howdy Party, Teacher Appreciation Week, and the Valentine Formal are only a few of the activities planned by the Student Council members and their sponsor, Mr. Frost. One of the major projects for this year was raising the money and obtaining a suitable home for a foreign exchange student. The idea of a foreign ex- change student, a completely new aspect for the students at Denton High, was possible because of the well-laid plans that were presented to the student body by the Student Council officers. Attempting to revive school spirit, the Council purchased a victory flag that flies after Bronco wins in various sports. One of the most important duties of the Student Council members is to encourage school spirit and democratic procedures in all activities that take place in Denton High. ' X . J I V 1 1 - f Council! Amana With the beginning of the new school year in September, 1962, the Horseshoe staff members embarked on a new journey: publishing a school newspaper on a bi-weekly basis and doing this by the comparatively new method of offset. This was quite a step up from the mimeographed newspaper which was distributed last year. New methods, procedures, counts, deadlines, and formats were digested and dis- cussed. Then the printing troubles descended in earnest. Several issues, several dollars, and millions of words and long, hard hours later, the newspaper staff of eight regular journalism class members and six auxiliary reporters is still struggling with the cold facts of life for all journalists: how to sell newspapers! The school newspaper endeavors to support all worthy campaigns and projects. It attempts to report all news fairly and without prejudice. Fin! Row: Mary Self, Marilyn Davis, Suzanne Derden.
