Nlemhers of the fourth estate here at Denfeld have their headquarters in room 307. This room is the traditional ahode of our school paper, the Criterion. Activity in 307 is at its peak every' two weeks when copy night rolls around. Puhlished hi- monthly. the Cri striyes to report the news, events and happenings which occur ill and around school. Rhoda Falk. and adviser lVliss Margaret Catz- weiler, and the whole staff have presented an i11- teresting paper for the students of Denfeld. The post of managing editor is held down hy' lfdward Nh-l'arlan. lfd's joh consists of co-ordinating the entire paper and proofreading the copy. which is a pretty hig undertaking that lid has met admir- ahly. As ill past years. the staff has again lived up to its motto: to keep Denfeld on the mapfi The Cri- terion has served all the organizations in school and publicized those outside of school that interest the students. The paper has acted as a co-ordinator for the community and the school. Through the write-ups and advertising in the Cri7' the com- munity has lreen informed of the various activi- ties which take place in llenfeld. Programs such as the Roy s' tinion Vodvil and the Girls' Cluh Up- eretta have heen presented to the puhlic hy this median. The husiness staff headed hy Don Johnson has done much to defray the cost of the Criterion hy' selling advertisements to the many' Duluth busi- ness places. 1Vlrs. 'Zan Suit the aelion to the word. the word to the aetion. with this speeial ohsert'anee. that you oierstep not the modesty of nature. -Shakespeare. llnder the eomhined efforts of Wliss Wlellngh. Miss Merritt, lVlr. llunn. and lllr Coetseh, the speeeh and de- lmate students of llenfeld have enjoyed a thoroughly sue- eessful season The tips and downs reeeiyed in any ae- tiyity were aeknowledged in the true Denfeld spirit Coaehed hy Mr. Hat W. Coetseh. who eame from Chip- pewa Falls to llenfeld this year. the dehate teams worked long and hard oyer the proposition of international goy- ernment during their season. The results of their efforts were highly eommendahle. The first team. made up of Dick Howe. Clyde Rogers. Doug Rapp. and John llill. welll through the regional eonlest with one loss on the affirmative side and took first plaee. The same team then prom-eeded to the state where. undefeated. they eaptured set-ond plat-e honors. ln the Yational Forensie League tournament. held at Cloquet. the first team eame through six rounds. undefeated. and then triumphed over Du- luth Central in the seventh and final round for first plat-e. Helping the first team and serving as alternates were ,lean Williams and ,Ioan Kempf. 30 The speeeh students participated in two very useful praetiee tournaments lyefore their hig tournaments eame up. Flight students plaeed 'in the finals in the National lforensie League tournament. Tasting victory in the dis- trict finals, nine students advanced to the regional. Re- eeiying a first in their individual events, Harhara Hell. Glenn Sampson. and Larry .lohnson proceeded from re- gional to state competition. lfaeh of these students re- eeived a rating of superior in this state-wide tournament. 0thello. lJenfeld's one-act play. entered the regional without having to eompete in the district. This proce- dure oeeurred when the other sehools within District 26 withdrew their plays. 'tOthello was directed hy Nlr. Dunn and assistant-direetor Barhara l'lumphrey'. ln the east were Leonard Anderson, Barhara Bell, Ernest Cen- ter. ltiehard liriekson. ,lohn Hill, Larry Johnson, Valerie Kaalxe. lflaine Pederson. and Doug Rapp. The hard work- ing east took set-ond plaee in the regional tournament, losing to lfly hy two-thirds of a point. Thus the dehate teams and speeeh students concluded another suem-essful year in all events. The supporting strength from the sophomores and juniors of this year promise exen greater sueeess for the future years.
