ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL 'S MESSAGE M. W. Young, Asst. Principal September 24, 1968 Del Ano Message As we celebrate the 200th anniversay of the establishment of the first of the 21 missions in California and concurrently the 50th publication of the Del Ano of Delano High School it seems only appropriate to reflect on those who have gone before us. A comparison between them and us is perhaps in order. What did those pioneers of California and Delano High School think about, what were their hopes and fears? Were they so different than we? We know from our history and science books that these people were just about the same as us physically. How about their thoughts? Most likely these people were not, at least primarily, concerned with riot, protest, mobs ruled by emotion, rampant lawlessness, a lack of sense of identity with humanity and purpose, a lack of respect for authority, a refusal of the minority to honor the decision of the majority while peace- fully working to effect change, or intense concern over- black and or white racism, poverty, crime in the streets, nor the threat of Communism. These are the dissimilarities. They had their own problems to solve, their own challenges. They met those challenges with strength, courage, resourcefullness, and faith in a better world-which is ours today despite its problems, its challenges. What is the legacy, the heritage we have in- herited from those who have gone before? What are our similarities? The similar qualities must be of greater magnitude if we are to preserve and overcome the challenges we face today as they overcame their challenges. The sameness must come in a sense of com- mitment to a better life for all mankind, resorting to and depending upon reason and logic, the developing of a sense of responsibility, seeking fulfillment by service to mankind. To conserve our democracy we must continue to support and defend law, order, justice and delegated authority just as the past Del Ano editors and Delano High School students have. Their wish for peace, liberty, equality and respect for knowledge must also be ours. They were builders of a better world. I President John F. Kennedy asked us to ask ourselves what we could do for our country. We have inherited much and have much work to do. Are we prepared to continue progress, to meet the challenges? Delano High School continues to be the trustee of the aforementioned principles and ideals and the vehicle for orderly change and prog- ress. Through logic, reason, knowledge and the ability to criticize what we do in a constructive manner, and through faith, and hope we shall work together to make use of the information and proc- esses we have learned here at Delano High School to make this a better world. M W Malcolm W, Young, Assistant Principal Joan Davis, secretary to the assistant principal
