Dr. Frank E. Dyer, Superintendent and Principal ausauipu- Marge Brumley, secretary to the superintendent 18 SUPERINTENDENTT MESSAGE DEL ANO MESSAGE 1968-69 As we focus our attention on the system of missions established in California by early Spanish explorers and priests, we are drawn inevitably to consider not only the special aspect of our cultural heritage that the mission system represents but also some deeper implications of the name of the system. It is important to be reminded of the contributions of the people of Spain and of Mexico to the opening of California to colonization and of the contribution of Californians to the beginnings of commerce, trade and governmentg Western civilization first came to California from these sources. We are fortunate in California to be reminded of our Spanish heritage by the names of many of our mountain ranges, rivers, counties, cities and even streets. We are fortunate in Delano to be reminded by the names of fellow students and teachers of the continuing important part played in the development of our school and community by those whose heritage includes Spain and Mexico. Differences among people can lead to bitter problems, but can also be asource of strength. Here, at Delano High School, we are proud of our differences and grateful for the unparalleled op- portunities they give us to learn to live and work together effectively. As the early explorers and priests brought their culture withthem and strength- ened the land, so we look to our students today to add strength to our educational program by bringing their diverse cultural heritages with them to our school. It is easy for us today to confuse the graceful buildings that remain with the real missiong the sense of purpose and dedication of the early colonizers. They sought to bring a new way of life to the people that lived here then - a better way of life than had been practiced. While today we question their assumption that their way of life was better, we do not question their dedication, their sense of purpose, their mission. Their lesson for us lies in that commitment to ideals. They hold up for us a lasting challenge to seek new frontiers with a sense of purpose and dedication - to have a mission. Delano High School will continue to provide students not only the opportunities to learn who they are and how they are related to the world in which they live, and to learn skills useful in earning their living in that world, but also the encouragement to develop a sense of purpose for their lives - to have their own mission. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL 'S MESSAGE M. W. Young, Asst. Principal September 24, 1968 Del Ano Message As we celebrate the 200th anniversay of the establishment of the first of the 21 missions in California and concurrently the 50th publication of the Del Ano of Delano High School it seems only appropriate to reflect on those who have gone before us. A comparison between them and us is perhaps in order. What did those pioneers of California and Delano High School think about, what were their hopes and fears? Were they so different than we? We know from our history and science books that these people were just about the same as us physically. How about their thoughts? Most likely these people were not, at least primarily, concerned with riot, protest, mobs ruled by emotion, rampant lawlessness, a lack of sense of identity with humanity and purpose, a lack of respect for authority, a refusal of the minority to honor the decision of the majority while peace- fully working to effect change, or intense concern over- black and or white racism, poverty, crime in the streets, nor the threat of Communism. These are the dissimilarities. They had their own problems to solve, their own challenges. They met those challenges with strength, courage, resourcefullness, and faith in a better world-which is ours today despite its problems, its challenges. What is the legacy, the heritage we have in- herited from those who have gone before? What are our similarities? The similar qualities must be of greater magnitude if we are to preserve and overcome the challenges we face today as they overcame their challenges. The sameness must come in a sense of com- mitment to a better life for all mankind, resorting to and depending upon reason and logic, the developing of a sense of responsibility, seeking fulfillment by service to mankind. To conserve our democracy we must continue to support and defend law, order, justice and delegated authority just as the past Del Ano editors and Delano High School students have. Their wish for peace, liberty, equality and respect for knowledge must also be ours. They were builders of a better world. I President John F. Kennedy asked us to ask ourselves what we could do for our country. We have inherited much and have much work to do. Are we prepared to continue progress, to meet the challenges? Delano High School continues to be the trustee of the aforementioned principles and ideals and the vehicle for orderly change and prog- ress. Through logic, reason, knowledge and the ability to criticize what we do in a constructive manner, and through faith, and hope we shall work together to make use of the information and proc- esses we have learned here at Delano High School to make this a better world. M W Malcolm W, Young, Assistant Principal Joan Davis, secretary to the assistant principal
