Dr. Frank E. Dyer, Superintendent and Principal ausauipu- Marge Brumley, secretary to the superintendent 18 SUPERINTENDENTT MESSAGE DEL ANO MESSAGE 1968-69 As we focus our attention on the system of missions established in California by early Spanish explorers and priests, we are drawn inevitably to consider not only the special aspect of our cultural heritage that the mission system represents but also some deeper implications of the name of the system. It is important to be reminded of the contributions of the people of Spain and of Mexico to the opening of California to colonization and of the contribution of Californians to the beginnings of commerce, trade and governmentg Western civilization first came to California from these sources. We are fortunate in California to be reminded of our Spanish heritage by the names of many of our mountain ranges, rivers, counties, cities and even streets. We are fortunate in Delano to be reminded by the names of fellow students and teachers of the continuing important part played in the development of our school and community by those whose heritage includes Spain and Mexico. Differences among people can lead to bitter problems, but can also be asource of strength. Here, at Delano High School, we are proud of our differences and grateful for the unparalleled op- portunities they give us to learn to live and work together effectively. As the early explorers and priests brought their culture withthem and strength- ened the land, so we look to our students today to add strength to our educational program by bringing their diverse cultural heritages with them to our school. It is easy for us today to confuse the graceful buildings that remain with the real missiong the sense of purpose and dedication of the early colonizers. They sought to bring a new way of life to the people that lived here then - a better way of life than had been practiced. While today we question their assumption that their way of life was better, we do not question their dedication, their sense of purpose, their mission. Their lesson for us lies in that commitment to ideals. They hold up for us a lasting challenge to seek new frontiers with a sense of purpose and dedication - to have a mission. Delano High School will continue to provide students not only the opportunities to learn who they are and how they are related to the world in which they live, and to learn skills useful in earning their living in that world, but also the encouragement to develop a sense of purpose for their lives - to have their own mission.
