UN RELIE VES HARD WORK 5 Fun combined with hard work fills Middle School students' time. A trtp to the hills taught wilder- ness survival skills: one class took a bus to the Sand Dunes to study the flora and fauna. Mrs. Vanlwarden 's choir gave a concert of Spanish folk songs, recorded by Ruth Marte Colvllle. All songs were sung In Spanish with Mrs. Martinez and Mr. Chavez helplng In the pronounclatlon of the words. Afterwards. the cholr was rewarded for their successful concert with a trip to Taos, New Mexico. More fun. mixed with hard work, includes intra-murals tn boys' and girls' basketball: flag- football for sixth grade boys: spirit week celebra- tions before a big game. Teachers also make learning fun and funny. For example, Mrs. Harrl- son assigned her classes a theme to write on How to make a Peanut Butter Sandwich. The next day she made a sandwich based on student theme directions. She even had to spread the goo- ey stuff with her fingers as no one wrote .to use a kntfe. The most fun of all was to have the new Middle School library open with lots of new books and with a very helpful librarian. Someday we'll look back and say. We worked hard ln Middle School, but we surely dld have lots of fun. We had tt made. r 711 E 'Y i L, h f 5 r 4 W R lx! 1 ti 1 1 i . X 1 r Aw 4, we 'R-H LL ft' -. This stimulating tralnlng has enlivened the entire council, resulting ln some exclt' Ing new actlvltles. For example, the members put red apples In each teacher's mailbox for the first day of school and assigned secret pals for each teacher: they have spon- sored the homecoming activities, cake raffles, Tiger- manla booth for basketball, and a Christmas formal dance. Also, their concern for the school has Involved them In such projects as helping to re write the dress code, attending school board and accountability committee meetings, and working for the Involvement of all stu- dents. This year they participated In the Fall Leadership Conference at Sargent High School, the District Conference Competi- tlon at Adams State College and the State com- petition In Colorado Springs. To help pay ex- penses for these conferences, they prepared and sold football programs and held a bake sale with FHA on play nights. Il Officers: Standing: C. Wlescamp, Sec., M. Hamlett, Parl.g D. The play was about Danny Holms who adopted the ldentlty of hls close war buddy, Larry Benson, when Larry was killed In actlon. Danny, really bellevlng he was Larry, returned to Larry's home, where each member of the family reacts differently to thls stranger. The students portrayed thelr emotional parts extremely well. The success of The Death and Life of Larry Benson de- pended a great deal on a smooth-working stage crew. Fortunately Dennls Blea and his crew never fouled up once. They spent many hours settlng up the stage and synchronizing all the sound effects. All the props were ready, on tlme, and In the rlght place. These were the things that made The Death and Life of Larry Benson a blg success. STAGE CREW: Dennis Blea, Kelvln Yund, Steve Skaffl Jlm Swartz. Between the scenes of the play several other talented students put on ollos, panto- mimes, and sklts to make the 1981 junior-senior play a very excltlng event 63 TIGERS DE VELO AR TIS TIC TA LENTS lf you someday hear a loud whine coming from Mr. Wallace's lndus- trlal Arts room, It really is not the students' crying: lt Is the sound of electric saws cutting through hard wood. Other excruclatlng sounds might be from drill bits, hammers, rasp of files on metal, Everybody is busy making something useful and decorative. ln their wake they leave the strong odor of freshly sa wed wood, This class may be tak- en by both boys and girls, but boys seem to have a special love for draftlng, bulldlng, and construct- Ing. Mrs. Kernenl Homemaklng classes are the classes most students like to take. lt could be because of the good aromas that come from there: and students know that If they were In there, they would get to eat delicious cooklng Instead of just smelling lt. Eating ls not all you do In Homemaklng. There's sewing and just not for girls: boys sew too. Everyone really gets excited to start sewing for his wardrobe, but It can get frustrating, when a gar- ment does not look like you want It to look. Homemaklng ls the chal- lenge of creating things for person- al satisfaction. Mr. Turja 's art classes appeal to the students who have a sensitivity to the beautiful. ln his classroom, the student has many opportunities to develop and express hls artistic tal- ents. Wlth paints, string, scratch board, decoupage, charcoal, Inks, the aesthetic person glves expres- sion to his creative impulses. Also Mr. Turja 's classes are fun because they are not organized rigidly. Stu- dents feel free to study each oth- er's projects and discuss their val- ue.
