American Field Service I think it is always a good experience to come out and travel while you are young. We came to New York and landed at the Kennedy Airport. It was really hot. I ex- pected New York to be really big so I wasn't surprised, but the smell of gas all over town and the air being hard to breathe bothered me. I like cities because there are so many differences. In an area like this, the people are very much alike, but in a city there are all kinds of people. There are many differences. Lars Andersson My father encouraged me because he had his educa- tion outside his home town and I think he wanted me to come here but still be myself. The only advice he gave me was to let my conscience be my guide. American people are practical. They find a way to solve every problem. Their way is not always right for others, but it is right for them. American people are friend- ly, they make you feel easy. The minute I get into an American house, I feel I have been there for ages. I would love to come back and I would love to live here, if only I had my parents. Lale Aka Council of Churches In my country we think of the United States as the land of a thousand possibilities, many cars and everyone is busy. I was a little afraid, I didn't know what kind of family I would get and I had mixed feelings. I like Ameri- can schools. They have wide halls and are spread out over a large area. Our schools are old and the rooms are un- decorated. School here is more like a game. I didn't have to make any adjustments when I got here. I don't even feel foreign here. Everyone made me feel welcome. Maren Sanderhoff I heard so much about the country I wanted to get acquainted with people, not through books and papers, but by talking to people. I like American campuses. We don't have football fields and all that. I am really glad I came. I wish many more students could do it. I think maybe I would like to come over for college. California is a wonderful place. American teenagers are friendly and willing to communicate. If all the teenagers in the United States are as nice as those at Del Mar, the nation can be proud of them. Gabriel Helbig

Boy's State Scott Martin was Del Mar High School's representative at Boy's State. Sponsored by the American Legion, Boy's State drew an attendance of 865 from throughout California. The meeting was held in Sacramento June 18-26. Through lectures, discussions, and elections, mem- bers increased their awareness of the role of the state government. After success- fully campaigning for his office, Scott was elected to the County Board of Super- visors. Girl's State Nancy Bonanno represented Del Mar High School as a member of Girl's State at the University of California at Davis during the week of june 21 thru the 29, 1965. Girl's State is sponsored annually by the American Legion Auxiliary. Along with 550 other girls from various parts of California, Nancy learned about the dif- ferent operations taking place in our state and local governments. Attending lectures and taking part in mock elections was only part of her busy schedule. Nancy also visited the state library, government ollices, and the state capitol. 2
