The surprise of the year at Del Mar was our Varsity Basketball team. Picked by the critics to finish near fourth or fifth spot in the WSCVAL, the Dons proved their worth by taking part in a three way tie for the loop crown. Their league record at the end of the season showed a notable 8-2 mark, as they lost only to Los Gatos, in the league opener, and to Los Altos in the finale. If the Dons had won the last one they would have rested on championship laurels by themselves, but because of the loss, they were forced into sharing with the Sunnyvale Jets and the Knights of Los Altos. Individually speaking, the standout member of the squad was Rich Gugat, a 6'2 senior. Rich was the high scorer in the league, a title which he has held for the past two years. He also was named player of the year in the WSCVAL, and received a berth on the ALL-SCVAL team, the North Coast team, and the Northern California team. As captain of this year's varsity, Rich certainly did his part in bringing recognition to Del Mar High. lf v lrzli M Q ffl , QQ!
