Girls' State Boys' State Julie Phelps Girls' State-- A place where a delegate from each high school goes each year to learn more about government. This defi- nition. although true, is brief and gives only part of the entire picture. Looking at these words go each year to learn more about government, a person does not realize how we formed into polit- ical parties and set up a complete state government, filling the official positions ourselvesg legislation was actually carried on as if we had a state depending on us. By putting into practice things that we'd read all' our lives in history books, this word. government suddenly took on a new and distinct meaning to each Girl Stater. In the definition of Girls' State, not brought out, either, are the warm, lifelong friendships and the common bond of Girl Staters, whether a girl goes to Girls' State in California or New York. The rich mem- ories of both the business and social times make up my own definition of Girls' State. an experience for which I'm grateful and will never forget. Julie Phelps Lloyd Gillespie Words cannot express what a young citizen's heart feels when he is one of 800 boys, all of whom are competing against each other for government offices and learn- ing the procedures of these offices. Besides the elections, the city. county and state meetings, the political party rallies and the court 'sessions all carried on by the boys themselves, there is the daily routine of living and a recreation schedule for this huge group. This recreation in- cludes music by the band, games, skits and the open canteen. A full schedule each day ends with the lights out at ten o'clock when all the boys are ready to get into their sleeping bags. The memories I have of the California Boys' State twenty second annual conven- tion are truly pleasantand worthwhile. This is probably one of the finest things that I will ever experience. I appreciate this opportunity given me by Mr. Miskulin and my sponsors, the Charles Wallace Legion Post Number 666. My thanks to them. Lloyd Gillespie

Foreign Exchange Students Aud Ostin-Olsen Susan Todd Dear Seniors of 6O, I knew when I received the letter from American Field Service that told me that I had received the scholarship, that the year would be a wonderful experience. You have been so nice to me, and all of you have contributed to make this the most exciting experience I ever have had. You have made me feel at home at Del Mar, and the school belongs and means just as much to me as to you. I really do not know how l ever will be able to thank you for all the nice things you have done for me. The only thing I wish is that every single one of you, one day would have the opportunity to explore my country, and maybe you will find whatl have found here, kindness, and friends for the rest of my life. I want to thank Mr. Miskulin, the faculty, the students, the community, and all the individuals, who have made this wonderful year possible for me. Sincerely. Aud Ostin-Olsen Norway 107 I feel very honored to have been chosen as the first exchange student under the Amer ican Field Service Summer Program to rep- resent the Campbell High School District abroad during this past summer, and wish to thank the School District, students, and community for this opportunity. lt was a very rewarding experience, and one which will greatly influence my future life. I spent the summer living with two fam- ilies in Germanyg six weeks in Southwestern Germany near Heidelberg , and two weeks in Northern Germany near Bremen. 'l also traveled to Kronach, Bavaria , where Ispent three days, and, from there, visited the border ofEast Germany. I made many lasting friendships and learned many new things. I had no knowledge of the German language, but found this to be no handicap, as the people were very willing to help me, and so I returned home with a working knowledge of their language. I hope that the American Field Service Program will be continued in this district. Sincerely, Susan Todd
