W i af +1 , f . , , J ff Seniors Portia Peters, Larry Manahan, Gene Kershner, Lois Weakley, As we look back over our four years at Defiance High School our minds are filled with recollections which are a mixture of work and fun. We began our careers as green freshmen under the guidance of Mr. Blue, our adviser. That year we elected as our leaders Lois Stenger, president, Bruce Derricotte, vice-president, Larry Manahan, secretary, and Evelyn Mayer, treasurer. We earned our way by checking hats and coats during the basketball season and enjoyed ourselves at a picnic and skating party at Power Dam Park. The next year we elevated our- selves to the place of experienced Sophomores. Mr. Fallon took over and we elected Gene Kershner our presi- dent with Bill McClymonds as vice-president. Bill Seyboldt served as secretary and Charles Stenger took in the money. Our main entertainment that year was skating parties and parties of various natures in the Community Room. At last we were sophisticated lwe thoughtj Juniors. This was the year of our first big play, June Mad. Mr. Hultz proved to be the guiding hand this time. Pauline Behrman, president, Ralph Jacobs, vice-president, Bruce Derricotte, secretary, and Gene Hoeffel, treasurer were chosen at the elections. Our financial project was the concessions at all basketball games. A big party at Perry's Pleasant Place along with the usual skates gave us the social background. And then here we are Seniors! To Miss Carter we extend our greatest appreciation for guiding us through our last year at D. H. S. The year was packed full of excitement. We enjoyed a most event- ful hayride. We worked hard taking care of the concessions at the football games and put on a most successful play, Moonlight for Herbert . We chose as our officers Larry Manahan, president, Gene Kerschner, vice-president, Portia Peters, secretary, Lois Weakley, treasurer. And so ends four great years as the class of 1946. From the bloody battles of war we have emerged scarred and battleworn, but victorious. We now stand upon the threshold of a united world of peace. In the classrooms and corridors of Defiance High School, day by day, we learn new things which prepare and educate us to take our place, when the time comes, as citizens of the world. Our clubs and school organizations greatly aid us in our search for new thoughts, purposes, and ideas. Our student council is perhaps the most important of all our school organizations for it is the representative governing body of our school. Here we learn our first lessons in world government. However, each club and organization has a distinct purpose which places it apart from the rest and causes it to have an individual value. The National Honor Society has played its part well through its tireless effort in the sale of stamps and bonds in winning the war. lt has now stepped forth as a leader in winning and hold- ing the peace in the same manner. ' We do not neglect our cultural training either, by which we hope to add beauty to this new world of peace. We have our Writers Club and Latin Club as contributions to this important side of a full life. Science holds its place in our plan through our Senior Science Club, business in our Commerce Club, agriculture in our Future Farmers of America. The academic life is considered by our College Club, which tries to guide all those interested in higher education into the proper school and course. The general assembly of our training school seems to be the Boosters and our Hi-Y. Being the largest organizations, public opinion is formed and broken through their influence. The time has come when we must leave these preparatory organizations and talce our place in the world of actuality and fact. We are reluctant to go, but already the gates of childhood have closed behind us, we cannot turn back. HENCH MARKET L. W. Their numbers are all of a light, difficult nature that is typical for Madrigal groups. These eighteen members are selected from the A Capella Choir and are its representative in all appearances. GIRLS ENSEMBLE This group of nine lovely iunior and senior girls was selected from members of the A Capella Choir this year instead of the Sophomore Girls Glee as in former years. They have made several appearances in concerts and organizations of the city. One of their best numbers Is The Lass With the Delicate Air. This year they have appeared in assembly programs and concerts, several times before the Rotary and also out of town. Edwin Griswold, first tenor, is the only veteran of this quartet, since this is his third year. All the others are serving their first year. N 54 On September 14, the 1945 Bulldogs started the season with the second highest score in the state by over- running Paulding 40 to 0 on our home field. Van Wert, on September 21, in one of the best games of the season, fought hard for a 9 to 0 victory over the Defiance eleven again on our home field. On September 28, we journeyed to Napoleon in a drenching rain to give them a 14 to O trouncing. October 5, we again returned to our home field confident of taking our old rival, Bryan. After considerable fumbling and Bryan making the first score, we came back victorious by a score of 7 to 6. Because of heavy iniuries from previous games, the Bulldogs lost their next game 2 to 6. Our opponent in this contest was Wauseon, the date, October 12. With a long way to travel but with most of our team back in shape, the Bulldogs defeated the Red Men of Fostoria, October 19, by a score of 6 to O. Our next venture was with Liberty Center on October 25. After being pushed aside by Liberty with a six-point lead, Defiance rallied to an 18 to 6 victory. The Bulldogs, putting up a good fight against Findlay, November 2, lost 14 to O when Findlay travelled around our ends for two touchdowns. In the last game of the season, November 9, the undefeated Montpelier eleven was out-played in a breath- taking game by the Defiance eleven to tally a 6 to 0 score, dividing the league championship between the two teams. Winning eight out of ten games in league play, the Bulldogs chalked up the first N. W. O. L. championship since 1943. Starting the season off with a record-breaking score against Paulding f90 to 135, the team won eight out of the first nine games. Beginning the 10th game the Bulldogs ran into trouble and won only one victory of the remaining eight games. We can't say this championship team didn't do its best by looking at the record and all in all everyone granted it was a successful season. First came Sherwood, who defeated us 32 to 25, which didn't make things look so well. But the Bullpups made up for their loss by outplaying Wauseon, 15 to 19. They were now on their way to victory. They even beat the tenth grade 22 to 23. Then they took on the Fresh- men and beat them 10 to 11 iust to show they meant business. Then they iourneyed to Wauseon and again defeated them 13 to 19. Next to fall was the Farmer team, 13 to 22. Then came Ayres- ville, whom they defeated with their highest score of the season, 15 to 37. Next they met Bryan in a sensational game which ended in our favor with a score of 7 to 34. But things were just too good and the Freshmen defeated them 16 to 14. So to prove themselves, they came right back with revenge to take the Freshmen 18 to 27. Now the Bullpups went out for blood and outdribbled Sherwood 16 to 18 in an overtime game. By serving as a training school for future varsity teams we see great hopes for the future varsity quintets. For the first time since 1942, Junior High football was again being played at Defiance High School. The team certainly showed some promising material for the future, but because of misfortunes such as lack of equipment and arrangements to play with other schools, the squad was unable to have much activity. Their one big game was with the Varsity Reserve, which they lost 26 to 0. Next year they have five league games scheduled. We hope from now on to maintain this group as a training school for our Varsity team. 59 Track l'irsl Row: Tom Mellon, Roger Shawley, George Ensign, Jim Bohlman, Jim Hale, Ken Mack. W. O. A. league meet. With a total of sixty-five boys on the squad, the Bulldogs opened the season on April 6 at Montpelier by taking second place with 51 points, while Montpelier took first with 6411s, and Na- poleon third with 335 points. At the next meet, a triangular affair at Bryan on April 13, the Bulldogs did not fare quite so well, as they ranked third with 345 points as they were topped by Bryan with 64 and Wauseon with 515. The next meet, on April 20, found Defiance giving stiff competition to Montpelier as they were nudged out by the slim margin of 495 points with a total of 5636 to Montpelier's 61 W. At the next, and last, regular meet at Bryan on April 27, the Bull- dogs again went down fighting as Bryan scored 63 points to Defiance's 55. The Bulldogs, however, stepped into the limelight at the N. W. O. A. league meet at Mont- pelier ahead of Montpelier and Bryan, as Defiance nudged Montpelier out of second place by coming in first in the mile relay, the last event of the meet. The meet ended with Wauseon on the throne with 61 points, Defiance as runners-up with 525 points, with Montpelier and Bryan dan- gerously close with 50 and 495 points respectively, and Napoleon practically at the starting line with 9 points. And last, but far from least, we had popular Jean Weidenhamer representing Defiance as our Track Queen at the league meet. 61 GAA - Women pre fqwwffwwwfwf AND EVERY GIRL A SPORT . . . QUEEN LOIS WEAKLEY '1 Home Coming Each year the football team elects a Homecoming Queen and attendants to reign over the Homecoming game which was played this year with Bryan. Her Maiesty for i945 was Lois Weakley and her attendants were Gretchen Weidenhamer and Ann Sproul. Queen Lois was crowned at a pep meeting in the gym during the after- noon preceding the game. Ralph Jacob, the captain of the football team, placed the golden crown upon her head. Just before the initial kickoff the band, with impressive fanfare, announced the approach of her Majesty and Court. After the Queen and her attendants reached the throne, she presented the captains of the opposing teams with a brand new football to be used in the game. The team then honored the court by winning over Bryan 7 to 6. The evening was climaxed by a big Home- coming Dance sponsored by the Blue and White. Gret Weidenhamer, Jim Bohlman, Lois Weakley, Ralph Jacob, Tom Schlosser Ann Sproul. 66 . . . MAY DAY The traditional May Pole with the accompanying festiv- ities is an important event each year at Defiance Hi. The king and queen of the festivities are picked by the popular vote of the student body while the attendants are chosen by their respective classes. Paul Palmer and Barbara Kimberly were chosen to be the reigning pair last spring and were attended by John Deindoerfer anr' Joan Mootz, seniors, Jim Hale and Mary Lee Wood- ward, juniors, Bob Slocum and Gret Weidenhamer, sophomores, and Tom Schlosser and Mary Lou Greut- man, freshmen. The king and queen were crowned by Jeanne Scott, president of the Boosters and Dave Waldron, president of Hi-Y, whose organizations were ioint sponsors of the activities. To complete the festiv- ities students of Brickell School presented The Little Princess and the May Pole was wound by girls of the Seventh Grade. For a full week the dignified seniors are displayed to the people of Defiance in a downtown window. But not as they are now. Oh, my, no! but as they were during the first year of their life. They are then turned over to the scrutiny of Mr. Bode, Mr. Farrar, Mildred, and Mrs. Lanning, who, after much ohing and ahing, decide who was the cutest way back when. This year their decision rested with Ralph Jacob, king, Joan Rufe, queen, Bud lmber and Imogene Rath, their royal attendants, and Lois Stenger, the trusty crown-bearer. They were then introduced to the students at the yearly assembly which officially opens the sales for The Defiance. They reign over the festivities dressed in the traditional bonnet and carrying the pacifying rattle. 69 .wi Senior Play he Seniors this year chose as their play the comedy Moonlight for Herbert . Tierney is finally shown up as the crooked contractor he is and Herbert gets his chance to go to New York and play for the famous critic. 7I E 3 r..
