Always Willing To create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community, high standards of Chris- tian living - this is the basic purpose of Deering's 'I'ri-Hi-Y. Under the supervision of Miss Howe, their faculty advisor, this active organization meets every oth- er Monday night at one of the members' homes. In addition lu organizing such moneymalcing projects as food sales, and sponsoring' school dances, Tri-Hi-Y do- nates food baskets to deserving families at Thanksgiv- ing and at Christmas. Deering High has always been well represented by the members at the Older Girls' tlonference and the Southwestern Maine Conference, two annual conclaves of Tri-Hi-Y organimtions. Niem- bership in this group is an honor, for members are elected: however, membership also entails serious ree sponsibilities. v , wmv' UI-l-lC,l'.llH: I-mul vrfzc: .lane Ilallowellg Roxann fflllllllll. president: lieth Ciatnage, tice-pxt'sidt-ntl Nusan flax- iouax. scctelznfl Huff: mir: Deborah lolm, ll1.'iINlII'l'l1 linda lieltl, alternate. An Honor To Serve Any unsuspecting soul who, after standing in an endless ticket line on a fold and bleak Thanksgiving morning before the game, is besieged by a horde of eager souvenir-selling youths in grey sweatshirts has, whether he believes it or not, benefitted from a .service of Deering's Hi-Y. This group has maintained an honorable record in both the school and com- munity. Hi-Y members annually donate turkey dinners to needy families at Thanksgiving and at Christmas. They sell souvenirs and every available program at the Thanksgiving Day football game. In February, the group turns .social to sponsor the Sno-Ball Dance, one of the swishiest affairs of the year at Deering. This year the annual Older Boys' Conference was held in Portland, and some of the members of our chapter represented Deering at the Youth-in'Government Conference and the Hi-Y-Tri-Hi-Y Council Convention. 111 l I I0 1 I- Cheney D. Helping Hands The only time that most students actually come in contact with the Red Cross Club is during the annual fund-raising drives when the money cans are brought into homerooms, and the quiet daydreams of the morn- ing study period are shattered by the sound of clinking change. However, the Red Cross Club is one of Deer- ing's worthy service clubs, comprised of a representative and an alternate from every homeroom. The representa- tives collect the money used for worthy charities and the various gift items for the packages which are sent overseas every year. These surprisingly inexpensive oh- jects can bring joy and happiness to a poor waif. Russell XVashburn lfncully Arlwimr Governors Aides The general seriousness of the traffic situa- tion and the unfavorable publicity accorded the teen-age driving public have concerned many young people for the past few years. Be- cause Klaine has a far lower driving-license age, at I5, than the national age, this problem has always concerned Maine high school students. Two years ago a chapter of the Highway Safety Council was formed at Deering. The purpose of this club is to promote safe driving habits among teen-agers, and to advise the members of traffic laws and safety rules. This club meets once every month: members are sent to. various conferences and meetings throughout the state. Membership is open to students who hold li- censes, or any other interested t66IlCI'. At a time when traffic accidents are increasing at an alarming rate, this is one of the most important clubs at Deering. Ng
