Service To The boys in the blue sweatshirts who usher at the rallies and perform other gen- eral services about school are members of the Deering chapter of Key Club. The Key Club is an outstanding service club at Deer- ing. The membership is composed of selected boys from the three upper classes. The mem- bers maintain an honorable position in the school and community, and are responsible to the Key Club International and the Port- land Kiwanis Club, their local sponsor. Un- der the direction of Mr. Perrino, faculty ad- The School visor, the boys organize paper drives, assist at the annual Kiwanis radio auction, donate Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, and hold car washes. livery year, there is an opportunity for these hard-working Deering- ites to attend a convention in Boston. In ad- dition to this, the Kiwanis Club accords spe- cial attention to two of the members each week at their luncheon. D Club The aim of almost every girl in Deering High School appears to be an opportunity to wear some athlete's purple D sweater to a school function or rally. Indeed, this sweater, as well as many other serv- ices, is a benefit of membership in D Club, Deering's athletic' organization, and the most active group in school. The members are all lettermen, cheerleaders, and participants in the girls' athletic program who have earned over l00 points. Sweaters, letters and cer- tificates are rewards of athletic recognition: however, the basic' serious purpose ol' the group is to promote good sportsmanship. Traditionally, the president of HD Club presides over the sports assemblies and various rallies presented throughout the year. Every year the HD Club sponsors the Mayor and Miss Deering campaign, easily the gay- est time in Deering's school year. On Saturday night following Friday's campaign show and balloting, the winning team is announced at the D' Club variety show, which is followed in turn by the D Club dance. Ron' l, l. to r: P. An Honor To Serve Any unsuspecting soul who, after standing in an endless ticket line on a fold and bleak Thanksgiving morning before the game, is besieged by a horde of eager souvenir-selling youths in grey sweatshirts has, whether he believes it or not, benefitted from a .service of Deering's Hi-Y. This group has maintained an honorable record in both the school and com- munity. Hi-Y members annually donate turkey dinners to needy families at Thanksgiving and at Christmas. They sell souvenirs and every available program at the Thanksgiving Day football game. In February, the group turns .social to sponsor the Sno-Ball Dance, one of the swishiest affairs of the year at Deering. This year the annual Older Boys' Conference was held in Portland, and some of the members of our chapter represented Deering at the Youth-in'Government Conference and the Hi-Y-Tri-Hi-Y Council Convention. 111 l I I0 1 I- Cheney D.
