Arma virumque cano- In the belief that the future of a strong nation does not lie entirely in the realm of science, Deering has, through the years, developed and maintained an out- standing language program. French, Spanish and Latin are offered to round Ollt the students' language back- ground. Though only two units of a foreign language are required lor college entrance, many students perfer to continue their studies. Because a student at Deering may study only Latin in the lreslnnan year, the lan- guage prograin is of a three-year duration. In the field . Of course, different emphases are placed on the various departments. ln College Course English, writing techniques and literature are stressed to prepare students to take college entrance examinations and to do good college work. Commercial English emphasizes business terms to facilitate the entrance of Stll- dents into the business world. Regardless of the course a student is taking, a clear and usuable knowledge ol' English grammar and diction is es- sential. O, what concentration! E X x

Two new and chal- lenging courses have been introduced for the accel- erated classes - the M.I.T. course in physics, and a modern concept course in chemistry. However, there are also general classes for the non-college student, and physiological chemistry is available. In keeping with this year's general expansion pro- gram at Deering, two new biology and two new physics labs have been constructed. The chemistry space has been tripled to accommodate classes of 48, and budding Gay-Lussacs may now tinker with the latest equipment. Give any Deering math student the problem N-92.6x2l.4 980 and he will instantly re- 295 ply that the answer must be 3612. In an age when progress is the key to the future, math is especially important. General basic courses as well as solid, challenging courses are offered to Deering students. An average college course curriculum includes alge- bra in the freshman and junior years, plane geom- etry in the sophomore year, and Math D in the sen- ior year. The groups are divided, as are all college course groups, into levels of ability, with a special accelerated group at the top.
