Poe Jeff Vaughn l Adjusting to a new culture any students may have the experience of going abroad at some time in their life. Helena Nikula, senior, chose to give up a year of schooling in Finland to become more independent and learn a new culture. Helena lived in a small countrytown called Haapajarvi since birth, and went to a high school with approximately 130 students. In Finnish schools, most subjects are required. Math, religion, history, geography, biology, chemistry, and P.E. are all required. Also, two foreign languages, of which she studied Swedish and German, besides speaking English. Another big difference was the fact that Finnish schools don't offer clubs or athletics. The most shocking thing about this school, states Helena, is it's size. l'm not used to so many people on one campus. For freshmen elections, there were more people campaigning than there had been the past three years. 235

Decorating the halls for homecoming, a first time experience, students and teachers alike have a chance to participate. Somewhere in the masses of 49 underclass English classes, students wait to say cheese for the year- book.
