Denise Curley, junior, is cheering on our team to victory during a time out. Energy Is Seen in the faces ot varsity splritline members during a game against Apollo. Spiri develops unity ho are those wild people screaming on the sidelines when the basketball team is playing? They are the basketball splritline sponsored by Mr. Mark Palombo. All the credit for their accomplishments rests with the girls. They worked all summer and the first 2 months ot the year without a sponsor. My role has been strictly one ot administration and encouragement. commented Palombo. The two captains for the Varsity splritline are Tammy Martin and Therese Bomberg. The captains for the junior varsity are Tina Mallory and Ashlee Churchey. The team has improved since the beginning ot the season and we have great tun showing our spirit for the team and school. said Mallory and Churchey. The basketball splritline creates both enthusiasm and participation for the crowd and it also brings morale to the players. There are 10 members on the Varsity splritline and 6 members on the Junior Varsltyj All of the members work hard and stay many hours after school preparing for the next game. DOMINANCE wAs THE KEY t takes a lot of determination, speed, agility, and practice to become a successful varsity wrestler. The practices consist of take downs, which is when members of the team wrestle each other, tumbling, lifting weights and coordination exercises. The season has been pretty good according to Coach Flynt Swerdfeger. Winning the Chapparal invitational against 16 schools from This team has the greatest po- tential of any other team we've had at Deer Valley. Coach Flint Swerdfeger Arizona, California and Nevada furthered the team's successful season. The best wrestlers this season were Sal Abbate, with an 18-O-1 record, Kirk Whittenburger, 17-2-O, Shawn Edwards, 12-2, and Steve Petty 15- 4. Both Sal and Shawn won the Chapparal invitational for their weight class.
