Kelly, Jr., who has contributed many years of faithful and generous service to education-not just to us here at Deep Creek High School and Norfolk County, but in many other places in Virginia. After earning a B.A. degree in English, Latin, and Math at the University of Vir- ginia, Mr. Kelly began his teaching career in 1915 in Isle of Wright County, moving from there to the Suffolk Public Schools, Fairfax County, and Accomack County. In 1926 he came into Norfolk County to take the principalship at Great Bridge High School, where he remained for many years. Later he resumed his teaching at Portlock where he was chairman of the Math De- partment. When South Norfolk annexed Portlock, Mr. Kelly chose to remain in the county, so in 1951 we at Deep Creek were fortunate to acquire his services. Mr. Kelly is a member of the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Suffolk. Among some of his professional and civic affiliations in- clude his being past president of NCEA, a member and past president of the Great Bridge Ruritan Club Cof which he is a chart- er member nowj, and a member and past master of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge, No. 257, A.F. and A.M. fof which he is also presently a charter memberb. A gentleman and a leader of young people, Mr. Kelly has won the friendship of all those with whom he has come in contact. We, the Senior Class, speak with deep admiration in saying that we are extremely proud to have been associated with such a dedicated man to education. Mr. J. J. I would rather look you straight in the eye and say, I dare you to achieve something that will make the future point to you with even more pride than the present is pointing to those who have gone before you. I dare you to make your life a masterpiece in which you do uplifting and courageous things. I dare you to shoulder more respon- sibility joyously, to launch out into the deep to build magnificently. I encourage you to fix your roots deep in the soil and your head above the Crowd. catching the rays of the sun, to plan a daring pro- gram to crown the years of your life. If you can achieve the above. then the greatest reward that one can win is the respect. understand- ing, and love of his fellowmenu. Here-'s hoping you have the best of everything in your future life. if ff If '51 wr . get ft K 'Q Yf'ew,f Zh-.. i K-Us .1--ny Mr. Joel P. Ridings, Assistant Principal S-......,. It sure has been a tough climb up the ladder, but as we look down this ladder, we can see other students following our footsteps, and it makes us feel good deep down inside. Thinking over the past years in high school, we realize that the entire faculty has helped us to get where we now are. Our deepest thanks go to Mr. Jones, Mr. Ridings, and other members of the faculty for being our guiding light and for helping us to choose the right path into the future. Without their help and guidance, we don't know what would have happened. Gee, we sure had a lot of fun during our last four years-the class meetings that were wild and the dances without a record player. It is all right to laugh about it now, but at the time it was not so funny.Without the help of Mrs. Johnson, our sophomore spon- sor, Miss Tolson and Mrs. Tozier, our junior sponsors, and Mr. Watson and Mrs. Tozier fwe drove her crazyl our senior sponsors, we could have never progressed up the lad- der of success so well. I' 2222 Tozier, sponsor. fSeated, left to rightl Charles Flem- ming, Secretary, Sue Ellis, Chaplaing Jerry John- son, Treasurer. Class One thing all seniors look forward to is the Senior Ring Dance. The big moment has arrived at last! Our rings were here! Each of the seniors walked around for about three weeks with their finger protruding fthe one with their ring on ith. It was a possession to be proud of. The thought I've finally made it raced through our minds, but we still couldnit be sure. Those exams We had to take were not real easy. All of us began sweating them out until we were sure we had passed. This year has been a busy, but happy one, and so have the other years. Though each one of us had to work real hard, we had more fun than a barrel of monkeys Cjust ask some of the teachersl. Our future looks bright to us, and so we end this wonderful crazy year. Just remember, it may seem a task to go to school, but you are truly rewarded after you have finished. P. S. There's no place like school. .V Alla. fi, 1- fy!-lffl QU? There's more to being a cheerleader than leafl- ing the spectators in cheers. First, every girl must have a aver- age or better. If she meets this qualification. she may enter try-outs in the spring for cheer- leading the following year. There are many practices before the final try-outs. practices where each girl gets a glance at the work anil cooperation necessary for a goocl cheering Squad. When the cheer- leaders are selectecl there is laughter and tears. The s qu a fl begins practice in August for the big football season. After school begins, the girls practice twice a week. There is fun at these practices, but there's also harcl work. All the girls cheer at each football game, but only five cheer at each basketball game. There are many gooml times to remember . . . pep rallies, games, par- ties tespecially pajania partiesl. homecoming. parafles. money raising p ro j e c t s, and other events. Deep Creek is very proud of its cheerlead- ers this year. No wond- er, they're good! Last year many school records were broken, and Coach Caldwell feels that several others will be broken this year. Most of the squad of last year are returning this year as lettermen. Coach Caldwell expects several members of the squad to excel in many events this year, especially the running events. Since Caldwell has coached most of the boys for the three previous seasons he also expects his squad to come out on top in the District 1 Group 11 Track Meet. 1960 Hornet Speecisfers 1Back Row, left to righti Richard Hodsdon, Clifton Johnson, Jerry Honeycutt. lFront Row, left to Molleen, Billy Owen, Jimmy Bellamy, Frankie Hy- rightl Oscar McCloud, Norman Whitley, Herman man, Richard Davis, David Devers. fMiddle Row, Castle, Frankie Peele, Raymond Archer, Jimmy left to rightb Wayne White, David Elbon, Richard Goodwin, Lewis Holland, Earl Harding.
