TEACHERS. 9 TEACHERS. Charles James Capen, son of Rev. Lemuel and Mary Ann (Hunting) Capen, was born on Dorchester Heights, South Boston, April 5, 1823. In the Boston Latin School he fitted for Harvard College which he entered in 184(J, graduating in 1844, and receiving the degree of A. M. in 1846. He became Principal of the Centre (now Ames) School, in Dedham, in 1844. In 1849 he opened a private high and classical school at the request of prominent citizens of Dedham who had failed to induce the town to establish a public high school. In the summer of 1851, the town having voted to establish a high school, Mr. Capen was appointed master of the same, and com- menced his duties in September. In July, 1852, he received an appointment in the Boston Latin school, which he entered upon in September of that year, and, from that time to the present, he has taught there as sub-master and master. On account of the absence of the head master, he was acting head master from February to September, 1879 ; and as senior master he is now, October, 1889, in charge of the school during an absence of the head master. Mr. Capen married Lucy Richmond Seaver, April 26, 1848. Their childr en are Charles Lemuel, born February 9, 1850; Edward, July 14, 1854. Mrs. Capen died Dec. 17, 1881. Mr. Capen married Caroline Elizabeth Guild, June 28, 1883. Dedham, Mass. Erastus Worthington, Esq., was an assistant teacher in the school six weeks in the spring of 1852. He is now clerk of the courts of Norfolk county. Dedham, Mass. Gargelin de Fonteny gave instruction in the French language one year from May 17, 1852. He was educated at Charlemagne College, Paris.

10 BED HA 31 HIGH SCHOOL. Carlos Slafter, the son of Sylvester and Mary Arm- strong (Johnson) Slafter, was born in Thetford, Vt., July 21, 1825. He was fitted for college at Thetford Academy and graduated at Dartmouth College in 1849. Received the hon- orary degree of A. M. from Trinity College. Began to teach school in Fairlee, Vt., December, 1841. Taught four winter schools in Lyme, N. H., 1842-3-4-5; one in Maiden, Mass. ' , 1846 ; four in Dedham, Upper Village, 1847-8-9-50. Taught a private high school in Lyme, N. H., fall term, 1ยง49 ; also the Upper Village grammar school, Dedham, summer term, 1851. Was principal of the high school, Framingham, Mass., from Sept., 1851, to July, 1852, and has been the principal of the Dedham High School since Sept., 1852. Married Rebecca Bullard in Dedham, Aug. 4, 1853. Their children are Theo- dore Shorey and Annie Rebecca. Was ordained a deacon of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Boston, May 17, 1865. Dedham, Mass. Marie Louise Lathrop, ' the daughter of Rev. John Pierce and Maria Margaretta (Long) Lathrop, was born in New York City. Was educated at Linden Hall, Bordentown, N. J., and at St. Mary ' s Hall, Burlington, N. J. She was the teacher of modern languages in Rev. Geo. D. Wild ' s school, Boston ; governess in the family of Mr. Samuel Rodman ; assistant in the Dedham High School, 1853-1857 ; teacher of modern lan- guages in the Union School, Schenectady, N. Y., also in public school, Elyria, Ohio. Married Hiram De Witt Hall in Ded- ham, Sept. 1, 1864. Their children are Julius Mortimer Lathrop, 23 years; Joseph De Witt, 22 ; Anna Edith Living- ston, 20 ; Maria Louise Lathrop, 13. Resides in Webster, Polk Co., Iowa. P. O. Box 329, Des Moines, Iowa. Emily Orne Spencer, the daughter of Judge Amasa and Sophia Bridget (Parker) Spencer, was born Sept. 22, 1831, in McDonough, Henry Co., Georgia. Was educated in the schools of Salem, Mass.
